THE POUND SCHEME

Need for Maintenance of Supplies. As the relief funds available have nearly all been spent, it is doubly important that gifts through the Pound Scheme should be kept up to the maximum until the scheme completes it course at the end of September. This fact was stressed this morning by Mr C. 11. Virtue, acting-director of the Central Relief Depot, in mentioning that district executives would welcome the services of schoolboys as collectors. “All those in a position to help are exhorted to keep up their giving, in order to conserve the available funds for use when the Pound Scheme ceases,” added Mr Virtue. “ The compilation of the application forms is proceeding satisfactorily, and the data obtained has enabled the association to give applicants advice in respect to family allowances and help that may be obtained from the Hospital Board. In some cases a curtailment in relief has followed. The application form, in conjunction with the white identification card, will eliminate overlapping. “ Appeal cards are being issued throughout the city and suburbs, asking that donations be made through grocers. The launching of the Pound Scheme in Heathcote and Upper Riccarton is under consideration, and the Waltham district is being canvassed. The gift of a bicycle to replace one stolen from a schoolboy would be greatly appreciated, as the boy is one of a family of seven, and his father is a relief worker. “ The handsome gift of £BSO from the Owners and Breeders’ Association and the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association has been received, and this will enable the work of relief to be carried on until the end of October or early in November. The gift of linoleum and single kapoc mattresses would bo appreciated.”
