City Tramways.

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —Your correspondent disputes my statement that Christchurch fares compare favourably with Dunedin, particularly the concession tickets. He quotes Grand Hotel to Knox Church, but he does not, of course, quote the Christchurch fare of Is return Sumner, viz., 6d a single journev for eight miles, nor 9d return New Brighton for six miles. If special instances are taken in one case they ought to be in the other. Moreover, he ignores my contention that if Christchurch, with Scotch caution, had confined its trams to a three-mile radius from the city, it would be able to leave Dunedin in the dust with respect to tramway finance. It’s the long journeys which have crippled the Christchurch tramway finance, but they have made Christchurch. As to concession ticket rates in both places, I referred the matter to the tramway people and they quote a Government Blue Book that the Christchurch fares for the various sections on the basis of 100 chains average 79d, whereas Dunedin average a full penny for the 100 chains. I am still, PROUD OF CHRISTCHURCH.
