Vegetables Grown by the Unemployed. REPLY TO MARKET GARDENERS. A reply to market gardeners who have protested that their livelihood will be affected by the scheme for providing unemployed w'ith land to grow vegetables was made by the Gardens Allotment Committee at its meeting yesterday afternoon. ' Mr J. N. M’Leod stated that market gardeners protested against the scheme on the grounds of the possibility of the unemployed placing the vegetables on the market in competition with the professional growers. He pointed out that the committee had no legal power to prevent the unemployed from selling the vegetables grown on the land provided for them. “ If any man can grow enough vegetables for himself and his family and have a surplus for sale on the land that we are providing him he will perform a miracle,” said Mr B. J. Goodwin. He added that the plots would be 60ft square and this land was not sufficient to grow a large amount of vegetables for sale. Mr W. W. Scarff said that one of the conditions under which land was provided for the unemployed was that any surplus of vegetables had to be sent to the Central Relief Depot. Mr L. B. Hart said that the committee’s supervisors would see to it that any surplus vegetables would find their way to the relief depot. It was decided that a circular be sent to all unemployed taking up the scheme informing them that any surplus had to be sent to the Central Relief Depot and not sold, and that flowers would not be permitted to be grown on the plots.
