NEED FOR COACHING

Canterbury Rugby Team’s Position. MATTER TAKEN IN HAND. The question of coaching- the Canterbury representative team was discussed by the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The committee decided to take no official action but to depute the president of the union (Mr A. E. M’Phail) to confer with the solfe selector (Mr J. Burrows). Mr E. V. Phillips, who brought up the question, said that the trouble with Canterbury footballers was that they had no tactics worked out before going on to the field. Mr Burrows had more than enough work to do to attend to the forwards. Other members beliteved that if any assistance were needed the selector would ask for it. CANTERBURY UNION. Senior A Grade Competition Closed. The senior A grade competition was closed and Sydenham declared the. winners, with Merivale runners-up, at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The Waikato Union asked for £.120 towards the travelling expenses of its team, which were estimated to cost not less than £l5O. September 17 would be a suitable date for Waikato to play Canterbury. The request was referred to the Finance Committee. The Wellington Union asked that its match against Canterbury on September 3 be a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. The terms offered by Canterbury were accepted by the West Coast Union for its representative, match. Permission was given for the St Bede’s College first fifteen to play Timaru Boys' High School at Timaru on Saturday, August 6, with Father P. M. Scanlon as manager. The Ashburton Union asked for a Christchurch team to play Ashburton on September 10. It was decided to invite the Sydenham team to make the trip, and to ask Ashburton for particulars regarding expenses. No challenge from North Auckland for the Ranfurly Shield had been received, stated a letter from the New Zealand Union. The challenge had apparently been confused with thte one lodged by the Waikato Union. Mr T. Mil liken was appointed manager of the Canterbury representative B team to play a Northern sub-unions’ team at Amberley on Saturday. The Competitions Committee recommended that Boys’ High School be allowed to withdraw its fourth grade team and that points for the Evans and Redpath Shields be not awarded for the Sydenham-Merivale sehior A grade match on Saturday, It was recommended that the senior A grade competition be closed and that Sydenham be declared the winners, with Merivale runners-up. The undfer 7st schools junior series should be closed, with St Andrew’s College the winners and Cathedral Grammar School runners-up. The report was adopted. SATURDAY’S DRAW.
