BEATS AMERICA IN DAVIS CUP FINAL. Borotra Beats Allison. COCHET TIRES IN LAST GAME, VINES WINNING. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 1, 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, July 31. France retains the Davis Cup, having won- two singles and one doubles match to America’s one doubles ar.d one singles. To-day’s results were:— Borotra (France) beat Allison (U.S.A.), 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. 7-5. Vines (U.S.A.) beat Cochet, 4-6, 0-6, 7-5, 8-6, 6-2. Doubles. W. Allison and John van Ryn (U.S.A.) beat Cochet and Jacques Brugnon (France), 6-3, 11-13, 7-5, 4-6. 6-4. Yesterday’s results were;— Singles. Jean Borotra (France) defeated H. Ellsworth Vines (U.S.A ), 6-2, 6-1, 3-6. 6-4. Henri Cochet (France) defeated Wilmer Allison (U.S.A.), 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, 6-2. The match Allison and van Ryn v. Cochet and Brugnon was a most exciting and long drawn out game, lasting for no less than two hours and a half. Twelve thousand -spectators were present on the second day. The Americans spurred by their previous defeats started like tornadoes, sprinting to the net, volleying overwhelmingly, retaining the initiative and compelling their opponents to lob frequently. Their play was faultless up to 2-0 in the second game, after which the Frenchmen penetrated Allison’s service. Though Cochet was erratic he held his own. In a spectacular volleying rally at 2-4, he achieved a brilliant succession of interceptions at the net, putting the ball out of reach with unanswerable flicks of the wrist. Brugnon won his service and the Frenchmen led 8-7, but van Ryn saving splendidly evened .at 10-10. though' Brugnon s smashes and Cochet’s sledgehammer drives won the set. The Americans, somewhat subdued, captured the third set owing to the ! apparent temporary casualness of j Cochet. The Frenchmen maintained their initial lead in the fourth set, Brugnon being the best of the four players. He made the winning *set point with a glorious lob to the base line. America made a supreme effort in the final and led 5-3. France retorted 4-5, but America won after brilliant duelling at point blank range. Cochet in the last game of the Franco-American finals of the Davis Cup lost to Vines. Cochet was apparently tired and, knowing that the Davis Cup was already safe, disappointed by negligent play.
