INDUSTRIAL COUNCIL.

Criticism of Acland is Endorsed. The statement made by Mr G. T. Thurston, the president, in reply to Mr H- D. Acland’s denunciation of the principles of compulsory arbitration was endorsed at a meeting last evening of the council of the Canterbury Industrial Association. It was also decided to set up a small committee to elaborate on the statement in further reply to Mr Acland. The application of the Relief Workers’ Union for affiliation was received and accepted. The association will advise affiliated unions that they should select a representative of the association to act as an assessor in any dispute that may be created in the industries governed by its affiliated unions.

The council also discussed alterations in the method of distributing relief to the unemployed, etc., and decided to wait upon the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) with a view 1.0 asking him to convene a public meeting to protest against the present system. In a few weeks’ time arrangements will be made by the association to hold public meetings relative to the trade union movement, and it is hoped that Mr James Thorn, secretary to the New Zealand Labour Party, will be available as a speaker.
