“ Careless Lady ” is New Joan Bennett Film. "After To-morrow” (with Charles j Farrell and Marian Nixon) and sup- i porting programme will be shown at the Crystal Palace Theatre for the last time to-morrow night. “Careless Lady.” starring Joan Ben-j nett and John Boles, is the new Fox \ society comedy which commences at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Saturday. I For the first time in several screen appearances John Boles has a chance to; use his splendid tenor voice, and this ] is said to enhance his very fine per- : fomance in the male lead. “Careless l Lady ’’ has nothing of the slapstick about it. but it maintains a steady flow of laughs through clever situations and brilliant dialogue. The story deals with the plight of Sally Brown (Joan Bennett), a smalltown girl who craves adoration instead of patronage from the local boys. Out- | classed by her cousin who returns from ! Paris with beautiful gowns and an in- j trigtiing reputation, Sally decides t«> acquire n knowledge of the world and ' sets forth to conquer. In New York ' she visits a speakeasy, is arrested in a raid, and through the accident of | being mistaken for the wife of a wellknown man. is dismissed in court. This accident gives her the idea of going abroad as a Mrs instead of a Miss because of the greater advantages in having a matrimonial status. So Sally takes the name of “Mrs Stephen llliugton ” and departs for the Rue de ia Paix. where her money makes her a sensation. Unfortunately, however, Dir Tllington (John Boles) also makes a visit to Paris and is intrigued to find that he has a “wife.” Sally is dismayed. and when her new ” husband ” rescues her from an adventurer, she flees hastily back home for peace and quiet, only to find that her "marriage” has been reported. Desperately inventing a quarrel and a separation to account for the bridegroom's absence, Sally is further amazed to find that he has followed her—under an alias. The complications that ensue lead to a swift climax.
