Two Women and Man Convicted of Theft.
j Jointly charged with theft from two i city shops, two women, and a man ap- ‘ peared in the Magistrate’s Courc to-day before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Accused were Ethel Workman a domestic, aged forty-two, Mollie Millar, a domestic, aged twenty-five and Thomas George Flynn, a steward, aged thirty-seven. All three accused pleaded not guilty. The accused were charged witn stealing a woman’s jumper valued at 12s lid, and a hat valued at 4s lid, the property of M. Hollander, Ltd., on June 24, and also with stealing a handbag valued at £2 2s, property of the Drapery Importing Co., Ltd. Sub-Inspector Edwards said that the actions of the three accused in the D.I.C. attracted the attention of the shop superintendent, and a ’watch waJ kept. The accused left the sh p and were followed. As a result of something passing from one of the accused to another, a constable was summoned, and they were taken to the Police Station, where articles were found in their possession. Later, the articles were identified as being part of the stocks of the two shops concerned. Witnesses from the two shops concerned were called to identify the articles. Sergeant Leckie, who interviewed the accused at the Police Station sta ed that all three smelt of liquor In convicting all three accused the Magistrate said that he would give both women a chance. Workman and Millar were placed on probation for twelve months, and Flynn was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. Each of the accused was ordered to take nut a pro-1 hibition order.
