WILL IMPORT WHEAT
850,000 Bushels to Come to New Zealand. GOVERNMENT’S ARRANGEMENT. (Special to the " Star.”) WELLINGTON, June 30. Explaining his announcement that arrangements had been made for the importation of 850,000 bushels of wheat from Australia, the Minister of Industries and Commerce said that the duties on wheat and flour were such that it was not possible for mills to import bulk supplies of wheat and pay full duty in compettition with imported flour. “ Moreover,” he said, “ the prices which the mills pay for wheat vary according to their location, and the prices of flour are also not v.niform throughout the Dominion, being appreciably lower in the wheat-growing provinces than elsewhere. The prices at which millers will receive imported supplies will be adjusted accordingly. The action taken will, therefore, not disturb internal price levels. “ The Government has given consideration to representations regarding fowl-wheat,” he added. “It is believed that the importation of supplies for milling will relieve the pressure on the local market arising from the fact that mills have been competing and purchasing for flour production qualities which would normally be available as fowl-wheat.”
