ADDINGTON YARDS.

Appreciable Rise in Beef Values. MUTTON PRICES FIRMER. After weeks of falling prices, most of the sections at the metropolitan market at Addington yesterday took a turn for the l>etter, and an advance in values was recorded. This was particularly the case with fat cattle, which made a gain of from 20s to 25s a head on last week’s low rates. The best of the yarding was of outstanding quality, and there were fewer inferior sorts. Store cattle met with a fair demand, and good dairy cows made an advance of from 25s to 30s a head over last week, while the inferior sorts sold better than usual. Exporters operated more freely than usual in the fat sheep pens, and in a good sale values rose by Is a head on last week. The best of the fat lambs were bought at up to 4Ad per lb, which was a farthing above the lowered export rate for firsts. The rest of the yarding suffered a slight fall in values as a result of the revised schedule. There were many end-of-the-season lines offering. The store sheep were of poor quality compared with the previous week, and there were few buyers about. There was no quotable change in values. Store lambs had a fairly good sale. Both fat and store pigs were sold at prices slightly in advance of recent rates. Fat Cattle. The entry comprised 325 head, a few less? than last week. Top price of the sale was £l3 2s 6d for two exceptionally good cattle from the Montrose Estate. A good line of 18 Hereford steers from Sharp Bros. (Halswell) averaged £lO 2s, and a truck lot from D. Mucdonald (Edendale) sold at from £8 7s 6d to £lO 2s 6d. The best cow price was £9 17s 6d. and heifer £8 12s 6d, for cattle sold on behalf of clients. Values were:— Extra prime steers, to £l3 2s (id. Prime heavy steers, £8 to £lO ss. Medium-weight prime steers, £0 to £7 10s. Medium quality steers, £4 5s to £5 Light steers, to £4. Extra prime heifers, to £8 12s 6d. Prime heifers. £6 to £7 10s. Ordinary heifers, £3 15s to £5 15s. Eight heifers, to £3 10s. Extra prime cows, to £9 17s 6d. Prime cows, £5 5s to £7. Medium cows, £3 to £5. Light and aged cows, to £2 10s. Fat Sheep. The fat sheep entry was considerably smaller than last week, numbering 4500 head, compared with 6500. Quality was only moderate, there being fewer prime lines from a distance, and wethers formed a small proportion. The market opened somewhat better than last week, and maintained a good tone throughout, being up on the preceding week by fully a shilling per head. Export buyers, probably in view of the close of the season within a few days, operated more freely, and quite a good proportion of the freezing weights went to them. Top price for wethers was 18s lOd for a pen sold on behalf of a client, and for ewes 14s 4d, for 19 sold on account of D. W. Westenra (Dunsandel). Values were:— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 18s 10s. The demand throughout was fair. Forward two-and-a-half to three-year-old Hereford steers made to £4 3s 6d, smaller to £3 16s; two-and-a-half-year-old Shorthorn steers to £2 15s, fresh cows to 30s, potting cows to 7s and potting bulls to 42s 6d. Dairy Cattle. An entry of thirty-four head of dairy cattle proved insufficient for requirements. particularly in the case of good cows, which showed a rise of from 25s to 30s per head on last week’s rates. Inferior cows and cows in milk met with a better sale, values rising by from 10s to 15s per head. The top price for heifers was £8 10s. Values were:— Good second and third calvers £6 10s to £8 10s. Medium second and third calvers £4 10s to £6. Others 30s to £3. Good heifers to £8 10s. Medium heifers £6 to £7. Others £2 to £5. Vealers. Medium stores 14s to 16s. Good stores 17s to 20s. Extra good up to 265.
