Reduction Made in Price of Bread. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, June 2. On account of the keen competition and under-cutting in bread prices, the four-pound loaf, which has been delivered to the householder at Is and sold over the counter at 10§d, has been reduced to 8d over the counter at several of the grocery shops. So far the bakers have made no move to reduce the price of bread at their bakeries, but it is understood definite action will be taken to bring their prices into ] line with the cut rates. Unemployment. A short time ago representations 1 were made by the Ashburton Local 1 Unemployment Committee to the Gov- < ernment concerning the distribution of ( free meat, but no reply has yet been 1 received. At to-day’s meeting of the < committee, Mr A. Prentice, secretary i of the Hospital Board, stated that s something would have to be done, as £ the board would discontinue charitable 1 aid at the end of this month. It was i agreed that the matter of the distribu- < tion of meat would entail a good deal i of work, and that it would be necessary 1 to open a depot. In the absence of 1 details of the scheme it was decided to : leave the matter in the hands of the i executive. Boxing. ( The Ashburton Boxing Association 1 has received notification of the accept- I ance of the conditions for a heavy- ' weight professional boxing contest in i Ashburton on June 13 from J. Cossill r (Manawatu) and R. Xicol (Southland). 1 Cossill won the light heavy-weight class < at the New Zealand amateur cham- t pionships at Ashburton in August last year, being also runner-up in the c heavy-weight class. 1 Charity Ball. *

Turner, A. L. Jones, H. Marsden and A. T. Smith. DOMAINS BOARD MEETS. The Christchurch Domains Board met yesterday, when there were present: Mill. Kitson (chairman), the Hon D. Buddo, M.L.C.. Messrs G. Harper, F. George, R. B. Owen, D. G. Sullivan, M.P., W. H. Winsor, M. E. Lyons and S. A. Orchard The Curator, Mr James Young, reported that a new stokehold was being built for the propagating house and the stokeholds at the Cunningham and Townend houses were being enlarged. All general gardening operations were well forward. Footpaths In the South Park would receive a dressing of fine screenings next week. A request from the Amberley Domains Board for a supply of shrubs was referred to the Parks and Gardens Committee. A similar request from the Lincoln Domain Board was also referred to the Parks and Gardens Committee.
