SOUTHLAND BEECH.
Big English Order May Eventuate. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, June 2. An inquiry has been received from England by the sawmillers of Southland for 9,000,000 feet of Southland beech to be used in the manufacture of motor bodies. On behalf of the sawmillers the following statement was made to-day by Mr D. J. Wesney: ‘‘An inquiry has been received from Lon don for a very large quantity of silver beech for motor body work. It is estimated that, if the business is forthcoming, steady work will be provided for 300 men on full time for eighteen months. This would embrace all workers in the beech areas. If the order eventuates it will create a boom in the industry and, besides providing labour for the men themselves, it will assist the railways and will provide work at Bluff. Indirectly several industries and various tradespeople would benefit. It is understood that negotiations are continuing.
