HARRIERS.

Notes on the Various Clubs’ Activities. SATURDAY'S RUNS. The Christchurch Club held its run from the Heathcote Arms Hotel. Tnirtyfive runners participated, this being a good attendance in view of the previous Saturday s hard race. The trail-layers, unfortunately, allowed their experience of climbing among snow-clad peaks to run away with their sense of proportion. This led to the run being hard work instead of an outing for the enjoyment of the runners. It was a serious mistake, and should not be repeated. It is hoped that there will be a large field in the Kennett Cup race, although it is rumoured that one or two clubs will have difficulty in raising sufficient money to send teams to Christchurch. The Christchurch Club will billet all visitors competing in the race, and the club secretary asks harriers who are able to billet one of the visitors to notify him either by letter to Box 359 or by telephone 32-623. To-morrow’s run will be held at the invitation of Mrs D. Kane, Peraki Street, Kaiapoi. A bus will leave Newman’s Garage, Gloucester Street, at 2 p.m., returning from Kaiapoi at 5.30. G. L. Austin has resigned his position as secretary, and W. R. Oliver, who held the position of assistant secretary, has been appointed secretary, with H. S. Bowden assistant secretary. J. M’Kee has resigned from the committee and J. Farthing has been appointed in his place. Presbyterian Club. Forty-two members attended the run from the Sumner Presbyterian Church, when the trail-layers, L. Leech arid G. Mitchell, gave the runners another taste of hill-climbing. The trail led from the church along the beach, over the hill track to Taylor’s Mistake and beyond for about a quarter of a mile, then up to the Summit Road, following the road back towards Evans Pass road, which it joined on the Sumner side of the Pass, and then led home via the road. To-morrow a try-out will be held over the Kennett Cup course at Riccarton, for the two teams the club is entering in the race. The club will be the hosts of the Methodist Club at St David’s Presbyterian Church, Colombo Street, South. A visitor to the club on Saturday was D. N. Colquhoun, who was a member of the club in 1927-28. He ran in the intermediate pack. E. M. Hay and J. Mosley have decided to try themselves out in the fast pack, graduating from the intermediate pack. In the slow pack T. J. Anderson is showing a steady improvement in form. A. Blyth, in the racing pack, failed to secure a place in the run-in, this being his first default so far. The club will celebrate its sixth birthday on June 11 and the committee hopes to mark this occasion in a suitable manner. The leading points for the Run-in Cup up to May 28 were :—Slow pack—P. Kane 6 points, W. F. Leitze 5, J. Kerr 5. Intermediate pack—R. Clarke 6 points, C. Wells 5. Fast pack—D. Apperley 6 points, M. Ridland 5. It is proposed to include a sealed handicap in the syllabus for the next half-season, to be run off at the same time as the club championships. Baptist Club. Many types of country were traversed by the Baptist harriers in the eight-mile run last Saturday, through Burwood, Horseshoe Lake and Wainoni. The run was conducted from the residence of Mr E. J. Keats, a vice-president of the club. There were no surprises in the placings, except that L. C. Fulf<?rd and L. Milner were again disappointing. They will have to show a big improvement in tomorrow’s race if they are to be at all successful. It is evident, however, that members would benefit considerably by keeping together more in their respective packs. If a member elects to go in a particular pack, he must remain in that pack, and not break away from it. If the pace set is too slow for him, then he should try a faster pack. On the other hand, members should endeavour to keep up with the pace set, and not drag on the front men. Competition is a great force in bringing out the best in a man, but if he is content to amble along at an easy pace he cannot j To-morrow the run will take the form [of a, handicap steeplechase at the Ric- | carton racecourse. The run on June 11 will be held from the residence of Mr and Mrs R. M'Pherson, 19., Francis Street, Burwood, and the run on June 25 will be held at the invitation of Mr and Mrs W. W. Stewart, 14, Cardiff Avenue, Spreydpn. Methodist Club. Last Saturday the Methodist Club entertained the Anglican Club at a combined run from the residence of Mr H. C. Ell, Domain Terrace, Spreydon. Four packs followed a short trail of about five miles, and in the run-in of a mile some good finishes were seen. The racing pack was particularly interesting, C. S. 1211 (Methodist) beating H. O. Savage (Anglican) by a margin of about a yard, while E. J. M’Eachen (Anglican) was only a few feet behind. During afternoon tea the Harrier Quartette rendered several impromptu items. The captains of teams for the annual teams’ race on June 11 will most likely include C. S. Ell, L. Smith, W. E. Crawford C. E. Dawson, X. P. Alcorn and K. M’ Indoe. To-morrow the club will be the guests of the Presbyterian Club at a combined run from St David’s Presbyterian Church, Colombo Street, Sydenham.
