WILL NOT CUT WAGES

New Premier of N.S.W. Denies Allegation. CONFIDENCE SHOWN. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 20, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 20. Mr B. S. B. Stevens, the new Premier, has announced that if the present Government is returned the Ministry does not intend to reduce the basic wage, as alleged by its opponents. Reproductive works for the relief of unemployment would begin on Monday. The Government intended to review the appointments of conciliation committees, from which the Lang Administration had excluded the Australian Workers’ Union representatives and those of other unions not connected with the Trades Hall. Renewed confidence in industry has been manifested since the change of Government. The works of the Standard Portland Cement Company will reopen immediately, and employment will be found for about 300 men. Three patriotic citizens have forwarded cheques for £SOO, £IOO and £SO respectively to the Premier and Treasurer to be used by the Government as a free loan until such time as it can be applied towards the payment of the taxes due.
