TIMARU CLOCK TOWER.

Deputation Protests to Minister. (Special to the “ Star.”) TIMARU, May 20. A deputation consisting of the Deputy-Mayor, two councillors, Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., and the town clerk met the Postmaster-General (the Hon A. Hamilton) at the railway station and protested against the action of the Public Works Department in demolishing the clock tower at the Post Office. The Deputy-Mayor said that the people of Timaru were very loth to lose their tower, and they wished the Department to consider the matter further. The Minister said that the council’s protest would be recorded. He would see if they could negotiate a little before the demolition started. As had been said. Timaru was not in the earthquake area. That might affect the matter. lie would see what could be done, but it was a question whether the tower was a liability to the borough or to the Post Office. Instead of repairing the tower, it might be thought better to demolish it.
