LATE SPORTING.

TRACK ACCIDENT. Apprentice Rider Admitted to Hospital. As the result of an accident during training operations at Riccarton this morning, the apprentice rider, J. W. Sheehan was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital. Water Polo and Tarquinius had completed a gallop and were pulling up when Don Jose, ridden by Sheehan, started off behind them for a six furlong effort. Sheehan called out to the riders in front, and they moved out, but Don Jose crashed into the rear of Tarquinius. Sheehan was thrown off and Don Jose turned a somersault over him.

Help was speedily forthcoming, and Sheehan was carried on a stretcher to the trainers’ room, whence he was removed by motor-car to the hospital. He is suffering from injuries to the head and left knee, but his condition is not regarded as serious. Don Jose was a good deal knocked about, and is not likely to meet his engagement at Ashburton on Saturday. Tarquinius is also likely to be somewhat sore when he cools down. Final Gallops for Ashburton. Conditions were all in favour of training operations at Riccarton this morning, when the No. 7 grass track was available for fast work. In addition to the gallops given below, a number of horses worked usefully on the sand. F. J. M’Kay, of Invercargill, was present with the team which he is taking to Auckland. Apache was not noticed, but Paris, Taramoa and Irish Chieftain were allotted useful tasks. Lochlaggan ran five furlongs in lmin 3 4-ssec. Straightcourse and Fast Passage were companions for a mile. They finished together in lmin 42sec, the first five furlongs in lmin 2 2-ssec. Tarquinius and Water Polo went six furlongs in lmin 16 2-ssec. Rocket and a companion ran half a mile in 4 9 4-ssec. Homecoming and The Viscount got to the end of six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec. Seven furlongs in lmin 33 3-ssec was run by Night Recital. Red Royal and Rascal galloped five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec, while half a mile in 50sec went down to Gold Cross and Usquebaugh. Belvoir was to have picked up Topthorn at the three furlongs but missed. Topthorn did his half-mile in 49 2-ssee. Execution and Dunraven ran six furlongs in lmin 15 2-ssec. A furlong less was covered by Ranelagh and Rational 11. in lmin 2 l-ssec. Hounslow and Hystride were sent a mile, which they completed in lmin 43 1- Limited ran six furlongs comfortably’in lmin 19 3-ssec. Red Heckle was a length in front of Weatherly at the end of six furlongs in lmin 16 l-ssec. Taku Tama gave Monastic a start and a beating over five furlongs, run smartly in lmin 2sec. A similar task was nicely executed by Ma Belle Polly and Lochard in lmin 2 3-ssec. Craigavon and Solwit were associated for a mile in lmin 42sec. King Musket went with them for the first couple of furlongs. Eclair and a companion ran five furlongs in lmin 4 l-ssec. A similar trip was run by Waiwene in lmin 3sec. Natural joined in after a little more than a furlong, but Waiwene finished well in front. Arrowmir did six furlongs in lmin 16 2- Golden Dart joined in for the last half-mile and finished in front. Proud Knight, with some assistance from the Solferino—Colinette gelding, ran six furlongs in lmin 16 4-ssec. NOMINATIONS. Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s Meeting.
