PADDON SCHOOLING WELL. Paddon, who is now trained at Avondale, is reported to be showing marked ability as a jumper in his schooling efforts at that centre. The Archiestown gelding is a solid-looking customer, with plenty of pace, and, as he is a proved galloper in heavy going, he will be racing under favourable conditions during the next few months. Paddon is due to make his initial appearance over the battens in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rapa next Saturday, and will be ridden by E. Stan- * * * The “San Francisco Chronicle,” on April 6, devoted a whole page to the death of Phar Lap. ASHBURTON RIDERS. F. D. Jones has not engaged a rider as yet for Execution at Ashburton. A. Messervy will be on Dunraven, while G. H. Humphries will be on Topthorn and Craigavon. Another mount of Humphries will be Taku Tama. A. H. Eastwood’s mounts will include Waiwene. At Ashburton on Saturday R. Coveny will ride Rocket, Straightcourse, Fast Passage and Rascal. STEEPLECHASE IN DIVISIONS. At Moonee Valley (Melbourne) last Saturday there were so many acceptors for the Brunswick Steeplechase that the race had to be run in two divisions. The champion Victorian cross-country rider R. Inkson, who first rode as an amateur, was on both winners. Division of steeplechases has been necessary several times at this course in recent years. CONCENTRATE HERE. C. Emerson yesterday received Concentrate and Oratorian from Mr R. JMurphy, thus completing his team for that owner, which, in addition to this pair, comprises Gesture,' Oratorious, Martian Chief and Early Cup. * * * * Gallant Fox, in charge of S. G. Ware, has arrived in Melbourne. A MUDLARK. With the winter season coming on and heavy tracks prevailing, that proved mudlark, Lucy Rose, will be in her element and she should do well during the next few months. < This 1 mare was in good form at Te Kuiti, | and if she has gone on the right way since that meeting an early return to ! the winning list seems assured for her. | Lucy Rose figures in the Horotiu HanJ dicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, and if started can be relied on to put up a ! bold showirtg. SOLID PREPARATION. * Prince Lu, winner of the Great Northern Hurdle Race last season, is doing a solid preparation at Cambridge * and is stated to be in tip-top fettle. He was schooled over six hurdles last Saturday morning and, with W. Rennie in the saddle, gave an excellent display of jumping. The Lucullus gelding appears to have settled down considerably. having lost a lot of his tearaway habits and now works and jumps much steadier than formerly. This will be a decided asset in his favour when he goes out to contest the big hurdle race at Ellerslie next month. WON AFTER BOLTING. The win of Abbot’s Worthy in the Newbury Spring Cup on April 9 was a noteworthy performance. While the horses were lined up behind the barrier, Gordon Richards, on Abbot’s Worthy, became entangled in the ropes of the starting gate, and he was 'Z pulled off. Abbot’s Worthy bolted riderless under the gate. He galloped - the full course and then stopped and walked back to opposite the stands. He was caught and held until Richards could be brought back in a car. The jockey remounted and went back to the starting post. Abbot’s Worthy was the favourite, but after this misadventure the price went out to double figures. He showed what a good horse he is by winning in easy style by a length and a half. - LORIGAN S TEAM.

H. B. Lorigan has put Lavington back into work again. With Cockpen, Waratah and Rioghail also in his stable, Lorigan has the nucleus of a useful team, and he will take them all to Melbourne with him when he leaves, which will be toward the end of the month.

At Riccarton this morning, Gallivanter (I. Tilson) jumped four fences. He gave only a fair exhibition.

Eminent, who was entered for races at the Great Northern meeting, will •not accompany Historic and Lyrical, but he will remain at home and race at the Otaki fixture. TE RAPA RIDERS. The following riding engagements are announced for the Waikato meeting: P. M'Uroy, Foxhound, High Pitch and Arcade; G. Grice, Miss Rewa; K. Voitre, Prince of Orange, Speedmint and Marshland; R. Miles, Cruachan; and W. J. Bowden, Wiltshire. FOR MIT( TIELSON CUP. Seatown, who has twice won the Cornwall Handicap at the Great Northern meeting, is at present spelling, but he is to resume training shortly. He was in work in the autumn, but owing to the hard nature of the tracks it was decided to spell him, and when the conditions changed it was thought there was not sufficient time to train him for the Great Northern meeting this season. He was again turned out, but is to be taken up again with a view to contesting the Mitchelson Cup, an event he won two years ago. RACING CONSISTENTLY, Sparkling Morn has turned out a very useful sort of hack. At Egmont she won a double in good style, while at Wanganui she was beaten by Orby’s Choice on Thursday, but won nicely on Saturday. Sparkling Morn is by Hunting Song from Diamond Ring, by Kilboy from Hope Diamond, by Royal Artillery from Blue Fire. Her dam won the Douro Cup at Wellington and was a fairly good performer for Mr H. M. Campbell, who bred her. PROMISING NOVICE.

When schooled in company with Kawainga at Ellerslie last Saturday morning, Kaihoremai fenced exceptionally well for a novice and with a bit of experience promises to develop into a payable proposition over hurdles. Kaihoremai, who has done well since he arrived at Ellerslie, will contest the Maiden Hurdle Race at Te Rapa next Saturday, and is a possibility in that event if he reproduces his latest track form. STILL MORE. Mr W. R. Kemball has sent seven more yearlings down to Trentham, and they have been distributed between W. Hawthorne and W. M’Conkey. They have not yet been broken in. THE SUN COMING. C. Pritchard was pleased with the greatly-improved showing of The Sun on the second day at Wanganui, and it was good enough to warrant a trip further afield. Pritchard' has decided to take him to the South Island and he will race at Washdvke and Wingatui. * * 5fS * Maurice M’Carten, who recently underwent an operation at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, subsequently developed pneumonia in a mild form. At latest his condition was improving. OWNER SELLING OUT. All the horses in training owned by Mr R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, are to be offered at auction at the sale of racing and breeding stock to be held by Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited, at Ellerslie on June C. These comprise High Comedy, Tea Trader, Valmarie, Prince of Orange, Royal Artist and a rising two-year-old sister to High Comedy. On account of Mrs Reid, Coolmint and Lady Whirlwind are also to be offered. TANERIRI AMISS. The Cornwall Handicap candidate Taneriri has been causing his trainer some anxiety as a result of his forelegs filling. Up till last w’eek Taneriri was going along splendidly in his preparation, but he has had to be stopped in his work and this will not be in his favour, although he is well forward. H. Rama is doubtful whether Taneriri will be able to keep his engagements next month. FULL MEASURE SOLD, The four-year-old gelding Full Measure, formerly raced by Mr James Paterson, has changed hands, having been acquired by Mr E. Montgomery. Full Measure is to remain in G. Holland’s stable at Ellerslie and will probably make his next appearance in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday. The chestnut has already had a little experience as a hurdler and has trained on so well since making a promising showing on the second day at Paeroa in March that his new owner may not have to wait long for some return. Besides possessing size, Full Measure has plenty of speed and also jumps well, so that he should eventually develop into a very useful hurdler.
