OBITUARY.

Captain J. E. Bone. The death occurred in the Lewisham Hospital yesterday of Captain John Ernest Bone, a retired master mariner, who for many years was marine superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, He was seventj'-nine years of age. Captain Bone was born at Selwyn, Cornwall, England, in 1853, and was educated at Penzance. lie went to sea in 1870, first visiting New Zealand as an apprentice on the ship City of Auckland. Joining the New Zealand Shipping Company on its formation in 1873, as third officer of the Waikato, he later had command of several vessels of the company’s sailing fleet, and subsequently he had charge of several of its steamers.- He became senior captain of the service before being appointed marine superintendent of the company. Captain Bone married, in 1885, Miss Rogers, of Nelson, who predeceased him some years ago. lie is survived by a son and a daughter.
