CITY COUNCIL ESTIMATES

Special Meeting of Work* Committee. The estimates of the Works Committee of the City Council for the present financial year were further considered at a special meeting yesterday morning. The committee is aiming at a reduction of over £20,000 in its requirements this year, as compared with last year, and substantial savings in maintenance costs will be effected as a result of the work carried out with the £220,000 road and bridge reconstruction loan and the £39,500 unemployment relief loan, both of which have been almost fully expended. No indication has been given by the Finance Committee of its intentions in regard to the general rate this year, but it is understood that it will be further reduced after full provision has been made for unempl9yment relief works. Several members of the council are strongly in favour of a minimum reduction of 10 per cent in the rate.
