M. Doumer’s Assassin Tells Amazing Story. DOMINATED BY OBSESSION. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 18, 11.30 a.m.) PARIS, May 17. Gouguloff, M. Doumer’s assassin, told the examining magistrate an astonishing story. He had long been dominated by the idea of killing M. Doumer, he said, and went on the day of the murder to the Notre Dame and prayed for hours to dispel the obsession, but failed. He even vainly tried to provoke a policeman to arrest him by inquiring what would happen if he murdered someone. After that he went to a cafe and drank a bottle of cognac in an unsuccessful attempt to get drunk, but the idea of the murder persisted. He went to the book sale and was in a state of hypnosis when he shot M. Doumer.
