Messrs J. C. Borthwick (Hawk Hills, Kaikoura) and M. E. Holloway (Blenheim) are staying at the Royal Hotel. Messrs F. R. Jones and G. R. Grange (Wellington) are staying at the United Service Hotel.
Messrs W. Manson and R. J. Murphy (Wellington) are guests at Warner’s Hotel.
Messrs J. T. Wiggs, J. A. Redpath and D. G. Smith arrived from the north this morning. Messrs H. Elworthy, A. Cargill and T. R. Rhodes (Timaru) are amongst those staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr S. H. Mackley, Assistant General Manager of New Zealand Railways, is a visitor to Christchurch, and is staying at the New City Hotel. Mr Ormonde O. B. Anderson, representing the Cement Marketing Company, Ltd., London, is visiting Christchurch. He has lately made a tour of Australia.
Messrs E. B. Feaser (Auckland), D. J. Munro, K. D. Croft, E. R. Morgan and A. R. Streeter (Wellington), W J. Cummings (Timaru) and J. B. Robertson (Dunedin) are guests at the New City Hotel. Mr J. J. E. Downie, accountant of the Dannevirke branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the Opunake branch. He will be succeeded by Mr C. V. Francis, of Auckland.
Bishop Sadlier, of Nelson, is staying in Christchurch after attending the Rotary Conference in Dunedin. He is engaged in speaking on foreign missions in the various parishes in the city, and will be in Christchurch for a fortnight. The Rev. P. H. Pritchett has been taking the services at the Burwood Anglican Church during the illness of the vicar, the Rev C. A. Tobin. The Rev G. W. Dent, of St Luke’s, has also assisted. Mr Tobin, who has been seriously ill for some weeks, is now on the road to recovery.
Mr J. G. Hewitt, S.M., chairman of the Railways Appeal Board, and Messrs G. H. Mackley (assistant general manager of railways), K. D. Croft, W. J. Munro, and J. Elliott (members of the Department) arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Dunedin for a sitting of the board. They will return to Wellington on Friday night. At a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, the following delegates were appointed to attend a meeting of the Dominion Council on June 28:— Messrs H. Fleck, G. A. Hayden and W. E. Leadley. The Canterbury-West-land District vice-President, Mr G. W. Lloyd, and Mr E. F. Willcox, a member of the Dominion General Committee, will also attend.
Mr Leonard J. Cronin, of Wellington, has been appointed editor of “ The Tablet,” Roman Catholic organ of the Dunedin diocese. For several years a reporter in the Parliamentary Press Gallery, Mr Cronin has served a number of newspapers since he began his journalistic career some fifteen years ago. He was on the staff of the “ New Zealand Times,” Wellington, and afterwards with the “ Sun,” Auckland. For a time he was manager of the “ Waimate Advertiser,” and later represented the “ Otago Daily Times ” in the Press Gallery in Parliament.
