TIMARU UNEMPLOYED.
Men Threaten to Boycott Camp. (Special to the “Star.”) TIMARU March 9. A recent meeting of the Timaru Unemployed Workers’ Union resolved that no man should go to the proposed Mackenzie camps under existing conditions and wages. Mr D. Jeune, engineer to the Mackenzie County Council, stated, in an interview, that the council had spared no pains to make the camp comfortable and it had gone to trouble in ordering groceries bread, meat and vegetables for delivery on Friday at prices that were advantageous to the men. He resented the unfair criticism without knowing the conditions. To finalise matters, the council gave the men twenty-four hours’ notice, expiring at 9 a.m. on Thursday, in which to fill the camp, otherwise it would cancel all arrangements. This and other camps were to provide Timaru with 1000 cords of firewood.
