STREET COLLECTION.

Appeal for Funds for Relief of Distress. A meeting of the committee in charge of arrangements in connection with the street appeal to assist the Mayor's Belief of Distress Fund was held last present: Air S. W. Jameson (organiser), Mrs Hugh Williams, Miss E. Bowden, Alessrs J. Alawson Stewart, A. K. M’Phail, Dr J. Restall Thomas, Messrs J. W. Hillary. J. J. Staples, S. Cheetham, W. W. Watson, A. E. Purse, A. E. Summerfleld, J. W. Moody and Miss Niblock (secretary). The chairman said it had been suggested that he was unduly optimistic concerning the results of the collection. His answer was that he was still more optimistic to-day. The response to the appeal for collectors had been splendid, and he felt that if this response continued there Avould be a bumper collection for the relief of the distressed. The secretary reported that 192 persons had A-olunteered to act as collectors, and over a dozen firms Avere arranging to “ man ” corners. The members of the J. C. Williamson Opera Company had promised to gi\-Q their assistance throughout the day and to arrange a Sunday concert. Volunteers AA'ere needed for the shifts from one to three o’clock and fi\’e to seven o’clock. In all, it was hoped to haA r e 500 collectors. Arrangements were made for the canvassing of Lyttelton and the seaside boroughs.
