GALA AT SUMNER.
Mist and rain interfered considerably with the gala held last Saturday on the courts and greens of the Sumner Croquet and Junior Tennis Club. The cake and produce stalls and arrangements for afternoon tea were carried out according to schedule, but the croquet competitions were postponed till next Wednesday. As a substitute for these, arrangements were made for cards to be played in the pavilion tea room. Both the president, Mr C. E. Claydon, and Mrs Claydon left no stone unturned to compensate for the unfavourable weather. The cake stall was in the charge of Mesdames L. P. Longuet and J. F. Menzies; the produce stall, Mesdames Mathews and Crosbie; and the afternoon tea. Mrs C. E. Claydon. Those present included four Opawa members, Mesdames E. C. Rawnsley, Baxter, Allison and Essen, arid Mr and Airs Mai ley, Mr and Mrs J. Clark. Mesdames Gerard, A. A. Cheshire, Thompson, W. IT. Brown, T. E. Whitfield, T. T. Gough, M'Namara, A. A. Cheshire, Miss M. A. Bain and Mr H. J. Williams. The Claydon competition was Avon by Mr N. Donovan.
