Speaker Criticises Proposed Policy. The economists of New Zealand, and particularly those responsible for the recent report to Parliament, were attacked by Mr L. C. Walker speaking to the For New Zealand Society on Saturday evening. He predicted disaster if the recommendations were put into effect as a whole.
“We have been accused of being a nation of peasants,” he said at one stage of his address. “We not only have peasants’ minds among the peasants but we have peasants’ minds in high places. We have peasants’ minds in the economists of New Zealand. If we attempt to initiate their policy we will find that it cannot be carried out. Time for Reflection.
“You don’t need to be dismal about that report,” he said later in the evening. “I doubt if the economists know as much of the real world as they should know. The economists here are busy school teachers and I doubt if they have much time for reflection. One of the most revolutionary things in the world to-day is engineering and I doubt if there is one person in New Zealand who understands the economics of engineering. Don’t you think we ought to give the school teacher economists a holiday in which to think?”
