Gentians.
A Garden Corner.
AfOST GROWERS know and appreciate the lovely old blue Gentiana acaulis found wild on the Welsh mountains and esteemed for its sentimental value apart from its bright colouring. Many new varieties are now available to rock garden enthusiasts, excelling not so much in colour, as in size and vigour. G. Freyniana is one of the best of these. It has stems Ift long, terminating in half a dozen long tubular deep blue flowers, appearing in midsummer. G. semperfida is rather more slender in habit, but equally free flowering. G. sino-ornata is low growing and splendid for rockery or edging, flowering from March to May. G. lagodechiana has purple blue flowers in summer and is also a low dwarf grower. They are all increased by root division in autumn or winter, and thrive in a shaded gritty soil. T.D.L.
