GREY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(Special to the “ Star.”) GREYMQUTH, March 4. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) presiding. A letter was received from the M’Lear Park Management Committee, asking that the band rotunda in Boundary Street be removed to M’Lean Park. In moving that the letter be referred to the Finance Committee, the Mayor stated that the rotunda was a South African War memorial, and no doubt there would be a lot of objections to Its removal, which would involve considerable expense.

A notice of motion was moved by Councillor Williams that the rental on some borough sections in Blaketown not yet taken up be reduced from 3s a pei*ch to 9d a perch, except in the case of

corner sections, the rental of which to be Is a perch. Councillor Williams, in speaking to the motion, said the sections had not been taken up, as they were too dear. No working men could obtain homes of their own if such a high rental was charged. The motion was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it.

The general committee reporting on the suggested installation of a dry rendering plant at the municipal abattoir for dealing with offal recommended that

no action be taken, and that the engineer and abattoir manager go into the matter of offal disposal with Mr H. Baker, and arrange the best terms for its removal. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor J. M’Ginley, to call for tenders for the disposal of the offal.

The committee’s recommendation th.it no action be taken with reference to the installation of an electric meat saw at the Municipal Abattoir was adopted, and it was decided to thank Mr H. J. Wood, manager of the Christchurch City Abattoii*, for the information supplied.

An application from Mr A. Beban for a renewal of his lease of the Town Hall and, if granted, a reduction in the rent was held over till next finance meeting.

A donation of £5 5s was made to the West Coast Competitions Society to

assist it in celebrating its silver jubilee festival in August next.

It was decided to procure name-plates for streets to the value of £lO from Messrs Scott Bros., Ltd., Christchurch.

An application from the Greymouth Miniature Rifle Club for a rifle range alongside the Municipal Swimming Bath was not entertained. It was decided to endeavour to find the club a suitable site elsewhere on borough land.

Abattoir fees collected during the month of February totalled £llß 19s 7d.
