THE WEEK’S WORK.
THE FLOWER GARDEN. Trim hedges that are unsightly. Thin out growths of Carnation plants that have finished flowering. Remember the hoe is the gardener’s best friend. Keep it going continually between growing crops. Lift Daffodil bulbs as soon as possible. If they have started to form roots, plant at once. Lift and replant Belladonna Lilies. Disbud and tie Dahlias. Cut away inside useless shoots. Chrysanthemums must be kept securely tied and disbudded. Only allow shoots and buds that are to produce flowers to remain on the Chrysanthemums; remove the surplus. Seed of most hardy annuals can be sown now. Canterbury Bells, Hollyhocks, Pansies, Sweet Williams, Carnations can be sown. Most spring-flowering bulbs should be planted now. Lachenalias, Daffodils, English and Spanish Iris, Tulips, Hyacinths, can be planted. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. This is the season for gathering herbs. Cut Parsley down to the ground; this will induce fresh new leaves. Prepare ground for sowing Onions. Dig all vacant ground, cleaning off and burning any diseased material and perennial weeds, such as docks and couch grass. After digging ground, scatter about half an ounce of powdered naphthaline on each square yard of surface. Work it in with the fork or hoe. Make sowings of Spinach, Lettuce, Beetroot. Plant Cabbage, Cauliflowers and other winter greens. Pick Runner Beans close so as to encourage vines to continue cropping. Harvest Haricot Beans when foliage has dropped and pods are chaffy. Weed between seedling crops. Lift any Potato crops where tops have died.
