HER PLUCK FAILED HER.
Lady Torrington Commits Suicide. LONDON, December 10. Former "“Gaiety girl” and wellknown figure on stage and turf, Eleanor Lady Torrington was found dead in bed in her Westminster flat, with a gas-ring at her side. She first met Lord Torrington at the Ostend racecourse, where his horse was favourite and hers an outsider. Her horse won, and Lord Torrington hurried to congratulate the winning owner. They married in Paris in 1910, the jockey Tod Sloan being among those present. She obtained a divorce in 1921. She spent £30,000 on her training stables and stud farm at Shrewton, purchased from Mr R. S. Sievier, and won several good races, but was financially unsuccessful, and became bankrupt in 1930. Recently, she founded the Vortex Social Club in the West End, and spent her last evening there dancing. She lived frugally in her flat, doing her own cooking and housework, in contrast to her former luxury. Her solicitor denied, however, that she was living in poverty. Influential friends would have provided money if she had needed it. She was a very plucky and optimistic woman, and was planning to write her memoirs.
