“LOOSEN PURSE STRINGS.”

Chamber of Commerce Makes Appeal. (Special to the "Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 21. An appeal to all citizens possessed of wealth or influence to use their resources in every way practicable to give employment to young people was made by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce council in a unanimous resolution. Large numbers of youths leaving school were faced with the “ awful spectre of unemployment,” stated the resolution; and it was a matter of great importance that opportunities should arise for the placing of boys in businesses or callings, no matter how small the wage, so long as useful training was assured, and the demoralising influences of idleness and temptation were removed. The meeting was strongly of opinion that all citizens who were more fortunately placed should loosen their purse strings and encourage legitimate work for the absorption of the unemployed, thus bringing great benefits to the Dominion.
