TROTTING NOTES.

JTOR the eight events at Ashburton large fields are assured as the acceptances number 147. Tne race totals range from thirteen to twenty-five. The class is most satisfactory and given fine weather the club should have a really good meeting. * * * * Acceptances for the trotting events at the Waiau meeting will close at nine o’clock to-night. TROTTING PUP DRIVERS. F. J. Smith will drive Jewel Pointer, who is trained by him, in the Auckland Cup. C. Smith may be given the drive behind Reremai. If present intentions are adhered to J. M’Kendrick will drive Torpedo Huon. He trained the 1923 Auckland Cup winner, Blue Mountain King, who was driven by George M’Kendrick. A. J. Julian, who steered Admiral Wood to victory in 1916, will be behind Gold Treasure, and A. Brown, who scored with Harold Junior in 1918, will drive Auto Machine. Although no driver has yet been announced for Nelson Tasker it is probable that W. Willetts, who is working the horse for W. Brain, will be the reinsman. * * * * Acceptances for trotting events at Oamaru and Waikouaiti are due at nine o’clock to-morrow night. REEFTON ENTRIES. The Reefton Trotting Club, whose meeting is to be held on December 30 following the Westport Club’s fixture, has received a nomination of one hundred and twenty-four. The nominations are good average, the smallest being twelve and the largest eighteen. A pleasing feature is the good nominations received for the races for trotters. * * * * Acceptances for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting will close at eight o’clock to-morrow night. AUSTRALIAN HORSES. F. B. M’Farlane and G. N. Mauritz worked their charges at Alexandra Park on Thursday in saddle, unhoppled, and the Melbourne horses, who are accustomed to a cinder track, were quite at home. Princess Mauritius paced evenly over a couple of circuits. She is a classy-looking mare, and gives the impression of being speedy. Huon Voyage pulled hard while trotting alongside Nimble Direct, who seemed to appreciate the weight on top. Huon Voyage is a sturdy type of trotter, with a good stride, and he looks to be possessed of plenty of stay-ing-power. Wilber White and Donna Gulvallis were associated over three laps, the former galloping over the final section. Donna Gulvallis went very kindly in saddle. If the track had been in good order M’Farlane intended to strap the pacers up and send them along faster than they have been working since their

arrival. He said the team was now ready for solid work and he could ill afford to lose a day’s training before the meeting. * * * * Warspite, who has joined W. Willetts’s Epsom stable, was given medium pace-work in saddle on Thursday. Although this is Warspite's first appearance at Epsom this season, his condition shows that he has done a good deal of work. FROM THE SOUTH. The ex-Dunedin pacer Sunchild, who came north some time ago and joined W. J. Tomkinson’s stable, has recently gone into E. Berry’s charge. Sunchild was a smart performer in the south over all distances and afterwards raced well for the Addington trainer, but he now looks to be at the end of his powers. * * * * Acceptances for the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock on Wednesday night. * * * * The three-vear-old Clem Dawe has come through a solid preparation at Addington and will be raced next Saturday at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting in the Advance Handicap, where he figures on the limit. Clem Dawe has a good turn of speed, but he at present is deficient in stamina. * * * * A number of Canterbury horses with engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting will leave for the north to-morrow night. * * * * Peter Daunt w’as a disappointment at the last New Brighton meeting and his subsequent training work at Addington indicates that the fast pacer is not at his best just now. TO PACE OR TROT? Although White Satin is back again at the trotting gait she figures amongst the nominations for the forthcoming Canterbury Park meeting, both in pacing and trotting races. Since she has returned to the trotting gait, White Satin has been working well and showing no signs of breaking. * * * * Although Nelson Ata is doing plenty of useful solid work, he has not been sent along fast in any of his training. He is engaged in the two-mile event at the Canterbury Park meeting on the first day. CANDIDATES FOR GORE. W. J. Morland goes south this week with Gold Country and Senorita, who will commence their southern racing at the Gore meeting on Boxing Day, where Gold Country seems certain to start a hot favourite for the chief event. If Senorita behaves herself at the start of her races she should be a winner in some of the sprint events. A. Holmes will drive the pacers in their engagements.
