'J /Votes and news from everywhere

WAS FEARED would be the case, the lameness which Gustavo displayed after winning at the Dannevirke meeting on Wednesday proved

serious enough to eliminate his name from the list of acceptors for the Auckland Cup. It is ill-luck indeed for his owner, Mr J. R. M’Kenzie, and trainer T. H. Gillett. * * * * Auckland plans for Great Star remain indefinite as he is an acceptor for both the Cup and the Railway. * * * * I. Tilson is another Riccarton rider who will be in action on the West Coast at the coming meetings. * * * * RTCCARTOX S HOPES. Riccarton has not a big set for the Auckland summer meeting, but it has a representative among the acceptors for every event on the first day except the Grafton Hurdle. Dunraven is in the Queen’s Plate, Juniper and Azalia in the Robinson Handicap, Gay Crest, Compris, Jaloux and Great Star in the Cup, Tout le Mond and Delice in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, Great Star in the Railway Handicap, Tout le Mond in the Nursery, and Spoon and Shatter in the Christmas Handicap. Acceptances for three meetings close on Monday. Those for Marton are due by 8.30 p.m., those for the Wairarapa meting by 8 p.m., and those for the Waßiu fixture at 9 p.m. * * * * DAUGHTER OF PANTHEON. The latest to rejoin the active brigade at Ellerslie is a two-year-old filly by Pantheon from Dora’s Double, who has for some weeks past been working under her owner’s care. Since last seen here this filly has improved out of all knowledge, having furnished into a classy looking juvenile. She is particularly well grown, shows a lot of quality, and compares favourably with any of the same age and sex seen at headquarters for some time past. This filly is to be given plenty of time, and will not race until later in the season. Pantheon, an English horse by the famous Tracery, was a high-class performer in Australia and the eldest of his progeny are two-year-olds. He has already been represented by winners. Whether Semper Paratus went south or not was to have been decided by his form at Hororata. With the cancellation of that fixture, F. P. Claridge will have to guess about this so far unsatisfactory customer. Semper Paratus can gallop, but has preferred in the past to do his best in private. * * * * SHOULD BE VERY FAST. In Melbourne a few years ago, one ol the speediest mares in training was Una Carlos. She had a penchant for the “ straight six ” furlongs at Flemington. Mr “ Dinny ” Canny, hotelkeeper and secretary of the Werribu Racing Club, owned her. He is not a timid bettor when he fancies one of his own and Una Carlos did him good service. She is brought to mind by the fact that F. P. Claridge has in hand an Australian-bred four-year-old mare by the flying English horse Top Gallant, out of Una Carlos. Apart from three unplaced runs at two years, this mare has done no racing. She is certainly bred for speed. AUCKLAND CUP. Eleven is rather a small acceptance, but the horses still eligible to run in the Auckland Cup look to comprise the material for a very interesting contest. Spearful was not nominated, but the horses who finished second, third, fourth and fifth in the New Zealand Cup will fight that battle over again at Ellerslie to-day week. They were close enough then to arouse interest in the encore while there are some dangerous looking candidates among the rivals. The field in point of class is not the equal of that of 1930,- when twelve ran and the starters included Concentrate (third), Nightmarch, Star Stranger and In the Shade. Motere was awarded the race on an objection from Gay Crest. He has only 51b more to carry this time, while Gay Crest is up 271 b, and Seatown, unplaced last year, is up lib. At this stage, Jaloux, Gay Crest, and Motere look a likely trio to gain the places. sis * »js & With blunting Cry amiss and Nea Lap failing at Woodville, it was thought that J. M. Cameron might miss Auckland, but he is apparently going ahead with .his trip. Goshawk, Nea Lap and Gold Trail, members of his team, are included in the acceptances for the first day at Ellerslie. IN WESTLAND CUP. Royal Game, who won the Highweight Handicap at Dannevirke, is an acceptor for the Westland Cup. He has been racing for eight seasons and there are few horses in the country that have started so often and travelled so much as he has. As a two-year-old he had thirteen starts, winning one event and being placed on two other occasions, and the next season contested 43 events for 12 wins and nine placings. As a four year-old he ran on

38 occasions for six wins and six placings. He started in 35 races as a five-year-old, for two wins and seven placings. In the next season he faced the barrier on 45 occasions for two wins and ten placings, while last season, out of 38 starts he won three races and finished third in a similar number of events. This season he had has 13 races, winning one event and being placed in two others. Altogether, he has run in 225 races for 27 wins and 39 placings, so that he has had a rather strenuous time. SHOULD RE NEAR THE MONEY. Two exceedingly fit Riccarton horses are among the acceptors for the Robinson Handicap to be run next Saturday at Ellerslie. Spoon won once and was twice narrowly beaten at Riccarton. On the last occasion, when Great Star got to the judge a short head in front of her, she carried Bst 81b, the same impost as she has on this occasion. Shatter showed his pace, and finished fourth in the same event—the Members’ Handicap, and the seven furlongs was run in lmin 25sec. When he won the Flying Handicap at Washdyke on October 17, running the six furlongs in lmin 12 4-5 sec, Shatter gave the impression that a bit of extra distance would be well within his compass. His gallop on Tuesday morning pleased F. D. Jones very much. HER TURN OVERDUE. During the past month Lady Court has been in the money on several occasions, but she appears unable to win a race, and her turn is well overdue,. Lady Court is to make her next appearance at the Manawatu meeting, and the following week will race at Marton, and, with a shade of luck, she is likely to reach the winning list before those meetings are over. This filly has abundance of speed, but does not finish on at the end of her races, and this no doubt has been responsible for her failures in the past. * * * * A. M’Aulay has had an unusually quiet time for him this spring, but next mtonth will find him busily engaged with Nightmarch, Nightguard and True Shaft as the nucleus of what may prove a useful autumn team. * * * * Black Duke, who had 7st 51b in the Auckland Cup, declined that engagement, but is an acceptor with 9st in the Otago Handicap at Dunedin. Riccarton is well represented in the Dunedin acceptances. RAN WELL LAST YEAR. In the Manawatu Cup twelve months ago High Falutin’ (7.0) occupied third place to Historic and Merry Damon, and is engaged in the same event again this time with 7.13. The For.dell-trained gelding is a good performer over a middle distance, among his successes being the Stratford Cup, one mile and a quarter. If he is produced in his best form at Awapuni the son of Grandcourt and Table Talk is sure to put up a good showing in the cup, despite the fact that several good handicap horses figure in the list. A SPEEDY HACK. Haulbowline, who recorded his first win in a division race at Levin, and later ran second to All Humbug at Feilding, will do his holiday racing at the Manawatu and meetings. He is a speedy hack who usually fast in his races, and this will assist him when competing against the big fields in hack events at this period of the season. It is doubtful if the best has been seen of Haulbowline, who should be a profitable horse to follow at the above meetings. PLANS ALTERED. _ R. J. Mateer has cancelled his proposed trip to Taranaki. Dark Marble is not qtsite forward enough, while Lady Zulu’s form at Te Awamutu was not good enough to take her such a long way from home. This will mean that Gay Lap will be the only one of Mateer’s team to race during the holidays. Although Gay Lap finished third to two good ones in Karapoti and Supremacy at Te Awamutu his running was a little disappointing to his connections in view of a gallop recorded two days before the meeting. However, it is intended that he shall take his place in the Railway Handicap. FIXTURES.
