ORCHESTRAL RECITAL.

Students of Mr Laurian Beck. A successful first orchestral recital was given in the Choral Hall last evening by the students of Mr Laurian Beck. The playing of the young students was full of merit and augurs well for their t'Mture, both as soloists and as a musical combination. There were a few minor faults, which were only to be expected, but the general playing showed good expression and firmness in the attacks. Prominent orchestral pieces were “Waltz” (Beethoven) and the two Bach numbers. Mr Beck is to be commended for his attitude in striving to inculcate the cultivation of violin ensemble and orchestral playing. The personnel of the orchestra was as follows: Misses D. Bennett, R. Butler, P. Bates, Jean Marquet. L. Boyd, M. Boby, D. Cotton, I. Williams. Nancy Smith, Mrs I. Jones. Messrs J. Williams, A. Dale, Masters N. Rogers, D. Smith, the following players augmented the orchestra: Misses M. Wilson, W. Brunton, Messrs C. R. Moon, J. Barsby, W. T. Dobbie, R. D. Norrish, M. E. Withers, S. F. Lovett, H. Barsby. H. Wilkins, Pepper, J. Campbell, F. Bishop, H. Evans, Master G. Newson. The accompanist was Miss Althea Slack. Austin). Miss Lucv Fullwood was well suited in- Fisher Lad” (Maude C. Day), while Miss Millicent O’Grady’s selection from “La Boheme,” “ Yes. They Call Me Mimi,” was given with taste and expression. Two movements from Coleridge Taylor’s concert suite, “ Andante ” and “ Allegro con Brio,” enabled Mr A. Dale to display his technique with the violin. “ The Heavens are Telling,” and “Oh. Love from Thy Power” (Saintsaens) were two contralto solos pleasingly sung by Miss Alice Vinsen. A brass quintette, played by Messrs H. Barsby, H. Wilkins, Pepper. H. Evans and J. Barsby. was thoroughly enjoyed. The audience was very enthusiastic and many encores were given.
