TROTTING NOTES.

who failed to go away in the Derby, made some amends by winning the Bowhill Handicap all the way. He is by Nelson Derby from a Logan Pointer mare, and is improving all the time. * * * * Nominations for the Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock to-night. * * * * Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will close at noon on Wednesday. MOSTLY WELL BACKED. In the first race at New Brighton, fifth and sixth favourites were first and second; while in the Mace Memorial—the third event —the first two home were ninth and tenth fancies on the machine. In her first success Lily Bingen was fourth choice, while Pronto Bingen, who was second, was seventh fancy. Apart from these misadventures, backers had a pleasant afternoon. Royal Parade, Avernus, Biddy Parrish and Lily Bingen (second start) were winners who each started favourite. Avernus was followed home by the second choice, Gunfire. Similarly, Lily Bingen had the second favourite, Sunranes, as runner-up. The remaining event was won by the second favourite, Logaleen, from the favourite, Erin’s Pointer. * * * * Guy Bingen went a good race in the Trial Handicap and he looks capable of a lot of improvement, being on the big side. He stayed on really well. * sj; Edna Worthy did not do much better at New Brighton than she did at Ashburton, and her chance in the Great Northern Derby does not appear rosy. Jean Drusus is improving and her effort in the Improvers’ Handicap was a good one, as she only failed in the last furlong. * * * * Erin’s Pointer is best over short distances and in the Wainoni Handicap she paced a sound race. The Travis Axworthy pacer does best on a big cotirse. * * * * Autowin, who was second to Royal Parade in the Improvers’ Handicap, did not seem to get into a good position till nearly half the distance was covered. From this point the Author Dillon pacer put in good work. * * * . * F airyland looked like being very hard to beat in the Trial Handicap, as the small daughter of Guy Parish went away well and trotted solidly till well into the straight. Here, under pressure, she. broke and took same time to recover her gait, eventually finishing in fourth place. * * * * Real Boy, in finishing second to Marvin Guy in the Trial Handicap, went much more steadily than usual. He looked like having a good chance half a mile from home, but soon afterwards he lost ground and fell back. He came on fast in the straight and now that he has decided to trot solidly, he should soon win a race. Like the winner, he is by Real Guy.

Pronto Bingen, who has never been in better form, was second to Lily Bingen in the Dash Handicap. The Pedro Pronto pacer is racing very consistently, as he was second on the first day at Forbury Park. He does best over short courses. .* * * * Dark M’Kinney is not racing as well as was expected. He was mixing his gait all the way in the Sea View Handicap but he kept going and got third place. The Victorian trotter does not seem to possess much speed but he has plenty of stamina. FLEW HOME. Some Guy looked very unlucky to lose the Dash Handicap, for which he was a hot favourite. He got shut m on the rails entering the straight, but once he got clear he came along at a great pace, and with a few more yards to go would have been first instead of third. He is by Real Guy from Cammie, by Logan Pointer from Princess Sherwood, dam of Prince Pointer and Kotuku Jack. * * * * Guy, who won the Trial Handicap, is a five-year-old by Real Guy from a Marvin Junior mare, so that he is bred on sound trotting lines. He is trained by R. W. Franks, who usually has a useful trotter in his stables. Marvin Guy raced at Greymouth on Labour Day and showed some form, but lacked racing experience. He looks like being a useful sort. * * * * Goldworthy stayed on much better than formerly in the Improvers’ Handicap. She has a great turn of speed and as a two-year-old was very brilliant up to a mile. She is now improving in stamina. * * * * Micky Audubon trotted a solid race all the way in the Sea View Handicap and showed a return to his best form. The Great Audubon trotter is not solid over two miles, the final stages being troublesome, as he is not a solid stayer. * * *• * The South Canterbury-owned pacer. Gunfire, made a smart beginning in the Bowhill Handicap, and finished second to Avernus. He did not pace generously in the final stages, or he might have troubled the winner. Gunfire is a five-year-old by Man o’ War, whose progeny are racing very consistently this season. * * * * Sunranes, who was second to Lily Bingen in the Electric Handicap, was backed at Forbury Park, where the Sungod mare raced badly. She made a capital beginning in her latest effort and although she had no chance with the winner, she beat the rest of the field rather easily. Sunranes may never reach high honours on the track but she is a smart sprinter. * * * * Royal Parade, who finished second to Colorado at Ashburton, won the Improvers’ Handicap decisively, after being well placed all the way. He is a four-year-old by Peter Chenault and is improving fast with age. He looks like making a fine stayer.

In the past Pageant d’Or has raced best up to a mile and a quarter but he showed improved form in the Mace Memorial Handicap. He went away somewhat slowly but in the final quarter of a mile he drew right away and had the easiest of victories. He is by Rey de Oro from Pageant’s dam. Pageant d’Or is a very evenly gaited pacer and he will do a good deal better over all distances. CONSISTENT. Logaleen, who has been racing very consistently this season, accounted for the Wainoni Handicap in convincing style, after being with the leaders all the way. She is by Logan Pointer from Cocoaleen, by Rothschild from that good mare, Cocoanut, a Prince Imperial mare. Logaleen won at Oamaru on Labour Day and is a smart sprinter. Baron Bingen, who was second in the Mace Memorial Handicap, was not at all prominent in the early stages and he was a long way back at the * home turn. Half way up the straight he was blocked and had to be eased but he had no chance of catching the winner. The brother to Peter Bingen and Great Bingen is racing much more solidly than formerly, especially over two miles. SHOULD WIN AGAIN. Golden Pedro won the chief two mile event on the first day at Forbury and on the concluding day of that meeting put up a fine race in the mile and a quarter, in which he finished second to Mac Dillon. The Australian-bred pacer looks as though he may be successful again before the season closes, as W. J. Tomkinson has him in fine order at present and he is putting plenty of vigour into his races. * * * * Lily Bingen, who is owned in Ashburton, paced a fine race in the Dash Handicap, and was quickly in the lead, staying on well enough to just beat Pronto Bingen. She has not done 1 much racing, and her successes have been achieved over short courses. Later in the day she started a hot favourite for the mile saddle event, and appearing as though the earlier effort did her good, had no difficulty in winning. WELL DRIVEN. Biddy Parrish followed up her victory at Forbury Park by winning the Sea View Handicap. She went away much faster than usual, but broke at the end of half the journey, losing a lot of ground. W. J. Tomkinson showed fine judgment in allowing her to gradually get into her best speed. Trotting in her best style, she was third into the straight, and just beat Micky Audubon at the finish. Biddy Parrish is by Guy Parrish from that useful trotter Rose Peters, and is improving each time she races. When she learns to begin faster she will go into the best trotters’ company. FIXTURES.
