Bro E. Chamberlain (Hope of St Albans Lodge) is still an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital. Bro H. Winchester, who is the only remaining Charter member of the Hope of St Albans Lodge, has left the Christchurch Hospital and is progressing- favourably at his home. Bro W. Duke (Mistletoe Lodge), who died last Sunday, was a member of twenty-three years’ standing of the Mistletoe Lodge. He took part in the Boer War and the Great War and was for the past twelve months an inmate of Rannerdale Home. P.D.P. Bro H. W. Farrer (Trafalgar) is reported to be progressing favourably in the Christchurch Hospital. At a meeting of the Medical and Hospital Board of the Rechabite and Sons of Temperance Orders, cordial congratulations were conveyed to Bro A. D. Hassall, and the wish expressed that he might enjoy years of health. i P.G.P. Bro M. O’Donoghue has been , the recipient of many messages of sympathy from friendly societies in Canterbury in the loss sustained by the death I of Ills wife. D.D.G.M. Bro J. T. Archbold has returned from Wellington, where he attended the meeting of directors of 1.0.0. F., M.TT. On his retirement from the staff of the A.M.P. Society. Bro A. D. Hassall was presented with an illuminated address. He has been actively engaged in the Friendly Society movement in Canterbury for the past 57 years. 1.0.0. F., M.TJ. Biennial Conference.—The postponement of the 1932 Biennial Conference was decided on by the directors of the New Zealand Branch. 1.0.0. F., M.U., and the position would be further considered at the meeting of the directors in April next.' In view of this decision it will be necessary to amend the rules of the society to make it permissible to postpone or cancel district conferences. It was reported to the directors that the losses to the society through the Hawke’s Bay earthquake were not as serious as anticipated. The reduction in the maternity bonus under the National Provident Fund from £6 to £4 makes it necessary for lodges to amend their rules to comply with the change. North Canterbury Districts Lodge Efficiency Competitions.—Last Thursday

the Loyal Past Grands’ Lodge presented to the district executive their awards, which met with approval, and will be circulated to competing lodges. A very high standard of work was attained, and suggestions were made for the benefit of competitors. The positions of the various lodges in the Efficiency Shield are as follows: (1) Loyal Addington Lodge, 477 points; (2) Loyal Progress 468 points: (3) Loyal Leeston, 464 points. Initiation competition—Cl) Loyal Addington Lodge, 146 points; (- equal) Loyal Progress and Loyal LeesLoval Cheviot Lodge (Ashley District).—There was a good attendance m the Coronation Library at the last meeting of the lodge, over which N.G. Brother E. Burgess presided. Loyal Amberley Lodge sent an invitation to its annual dance on October 30. It was decided to hold a dance on Christmas Eve, and to cancel the arrangements for the November dance. Brother E. Burgess was thanked for his gift of a locker for the lodge-room. The date for the next degree night was fixed for November 4. Brother W. Perry supplied the music for the social. Loyal Ashburton Lodge.—N.G. Brother W. K. Waters presided over the old members’ night last Thursday, when supper was provided, and a social evening spent with musical and elocutionary items. The nomination for officers was received. and arrangements for the Christmas tree were left to the social committee. Sick pay amounting to £25 6s Sd was passed to twenty members. The T.ate Brother C. Millington, X.0.0.F., M.TJ. By the death of P.D.G.M. Bro Charles Millington the Friendly Society movement in Canterbury lost a most energetic and enthusiastic worker. Particularly in Loyal Volunteer Lodge of Oddfellows were his services most in evidence, and his efforts as treasurer and in furtherance of the Juvenile Lodge were greatly appreciated. The : large number of : members of the - Order and Friendly - Societies that at- • tended the funeral bore testimony to the respect in which he was held. He was born near Stockport (England) in 1861 and served an apprenticeship as a brushmaker, and later travelled to America for experience. Arriving in New Zealand in 1897, i he worked at his trade with Bunting J

and Co., of Christchurch, for twentytwo years. He joined the Fire Brigade in 1899 and put in altogether over seventeen years’ active service. Initiated into Loyal Volunteer Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., in June, 1898, h* served in many offices, obtaining the Purple Degree in September. 1902. He was treasurer of the lodge for a number of years and was treasurer of the Junior Lodge for over twenty-five years. He was elected D.D.G.M. at the District Conference in 1923 and District Grand Master in 1924. 1.0.0. F. Canterbury Lodge.— Last Wednesday evening N.G. Brother H. R. Preston presided over the meeting in the Foresters’ Hall. P.G.’s Brothers Duggan and Berry commented on the progress of the dispensary, and Brother Jordan, sen., brought the matter of outpatients of the hospital in connection with lodges. P.G.’s Brothers Cullimore, Jordan, Duggan, Moffitt and Jones were appointed as the standing committee for the next six months. It was decided that all Past Grands available should comprise the benevolent committee. Hakatere Lodge.—One candidate was elected at the meeting last Wednesday, over which N.G. Brother B. Parsons presided. Arrangements were left in the hands of a committee for the children’s Christmas festival, and a degree lodge was held, the degree master (Brother H. C. Preston) conferred the degree on seven brethren. Court Queen of the Isles.—C.R. Bro J. H. Harvey presided over a fair attendance in the Foresters’ I-lall, Lyttelton, on Tuesday night. The notice of motion in the name of the Permanent Secretary (Bro F. Coleman) placed before the last meeting, was discussed and carried. Mr F. B. Chadwick’s tender for renewals was accepted and sick pay £3 was passed for payment. Past Chief Rangers’ Court (No. 3 Subdistrict). —The officers and members will pay an official visit to Court Queen of the Isles on Tuesday. November 24.

X.O.R. Temperance Sunday.—Sunday next (November 1) is to be observed in New South Wales as Temperance Sunday. A big demonstration under the auspices of the Rechabite Order will be held at the Savoy Theatre. Sydney, and from 5 p.into 6.15 p.m. the service will be broadcast throughout Australia and New Zealand. It may be noted that New Zealand time is two hours ahead of New South Wales. Rechabite Provincial Council.—-The annual meeting will be held in Christchurch on November 14, and it is understood that the various reports will show a great Increase in membership. During the vear considerable interest has been exhibited in the initiation compefion, which has been the means of bringing about a marked improvement in the ceremony. So far the winning tents are the Pride of Christchurch and the Ark of Refuge (St Albans). The Chief Ruler, Brother JE. Pearce, presided over the fortnightly meeting ot Enterprise Tent. 1.0. R.. held in Rechabite Hall on Tuesday evening, une candidate was proposed for admission into the Order. The secretary. Brother Robinson, reported on the *P ee the Provincial Council and the Provincial Juvenile Executive, and stated that the juvenile initiation ceremony competition would be held in the Y.M.C.A. on the evening of November 7. juvenile superintendents. Brothers Dwight and L. R. Gifford reported on the meeting of the Juvenile Tent and also the part taken by the juveniles in the recent Band of Hope Union competition. It was decided that the Tent congratulate the Juvenile Tent on its efforts. The Chief Ruler reported on the Tent s anniversary social, which had proved a financial success. Sister Robinson (senior) read the recommendations of the Tent executive. In recognition of services rendered it was decided that. Brother Dwight. P.C.R., be presented with a Past Chief Ruler’s regalia, and that Brother Stevens be elected an honorary juvenile superintendent. It was decided to levy a voluntary contribution of 6d per quarter in aid of the benevolent fund. After the business meeting was closed dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr E. Earl. X.O.G.T.

Sumner Pride (Juveniles). —Brother C. T. Ford presided over the meeting, and the superintendent announced arrangements for Labour Day, and that the judges’ report on the ritual competitions would be considered at a massed meeting to be held shortly. Miss Young and Mrs Hall were thanked for their assistance to candidates in the Band of Hope competition. The election of officers resulted as follows: Chief Templar, Sister Duff; Vice-Templar, Brother M. Lawson; Secretary, Brother L. Clark; Assistant Secretary, Brother J. Clark; Chaplain, Brother T. Royal Arch Chapter, No. I—The Lily of Richmond Lodge room was crowded last night, when the presentation of prizes in connection with the various competitions took place. The Royal Arch Druid, Bro T. Moody, presided, and the presentations were made by the Grand Lodge officers as follows: Teams competition (Ivy of Linwood Shield), Mistletoe 239 J points; efficiency competition (P.G.P.’s collar). Anchor (first) 194 points; (Luxton Gavels), Lily of Richmond (second) 192 points. Solo ritual competitions: Arch Druid’s charge, Bro E. V. Noble (Mistletoe) 1, Bro E. A. Lapsley (Pioneer). 212 points, 2. Vice-Arch charge: Bro Lindsay (Lily of Richmond), 209 points, 1; Sister Fennels (Queen of the Oak), 205 points, 2. Presentation of P.R.A.D.’s jewel: P.R.A.D. Bro W. E. Cooke, Royal Arch Chapter No. 1. The presentations were rhade by G.V.P. Bro C. Barnes and Grand Secretary P.G.P. Bro F. E. Talbot.

[ Grand Lodge Officers Visit Ashburton. ! —Brothers F. Chittock (G.P.), M. I O’Donoghue (1.P.G.P.), F. E. Talbot (G.S.), F. George (Senior G.L. Trustee), T. \V. Burgess (P.G.P.), L. E. Hegan I (G.L. Trustee), J. H. Dennison (Board of Management) and J. Bierman (P.A. Ivy of Linwood) visited the Star of Ashburton and Success of Ashburton Lodges last week. The work of the board was detailed by the executive officers, and they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their visit and entertained by the Success of Ashburton Lodge. Reference was made to the financial position of the Star of Ashburton Lodge, and the indications are that the Sick and Funeral Fund will have a surplus on the 1930 valuation, as the fund increased by £1045 during the past five years. Trafalgar Lodge.—The occasion of the visit of the Grand Lodge officers was marked by a large attendance of members last Tuesday evening. G.S. Brother F. E. Talbot, G.V.P. Brother E. R. Warren, G.G. Brother C. Barnes, Senior Grand Trustee Brother F. George. P.G.P.’s Brothers R. H. Parker and G. Bates were in attendance, and the work of the Board of Management was reviewed by members of the executive. Interesting discussion followed, and many questions were asked. The large increase in membership and funds of the lodge was referred to. The visitors were entertained at supper. Hope of St Albans.—Last Tuesday the A.D. Brother Keene presided over the meeting at which the lodge trustees (Brothers Henley, J. N. Du and J. Jowsey) were present, also P.G.P. Brother J. Fisher and P.D.P. Brother C.

. Dunford. The sum of 10s was voted to the Cancer Campaign Fund, and it was announced that the Grand Lodge officers would pay an official visit on November : 10. Part Chief Rangers’ Court.—The popularity of the Court since its inception has been greatly in evidence in A.O.F. circles-. Its objects are: To enrol new members; to promote efficient rendering of Court procedure and Court ritual; to conduct district and Court ritual competitions when required to do so; to assist the ritual supervisor in his duties; to hold classes of instruction for the benefit of Court officers; to promote social intercourse amongst the various Courts in the district; to further the interests of the order by endeavouring to open new Courts.
