News in Brief
Young Trees as Firewood. Mr W P. Spencer reported at the meeting of the Waimairi County Council last night that the young pine trees which had been planted on Hayden’s Road had been pulled up by camping motorists on Labour Day and used to boil the billies. A member: Did you catch them? Mr Spencer: No. I arrived just too late. “ Star Pictorial ” for Christmas Mail. At a meeting of the Waimairi County Council a fortnight ago the inspector stated that he had brought a large number of cases of traffic offences before the council and no prosecutions had been rpade. At the meeting of the council last night a number of persons who were reported for speeding over intersections had short shrift. In every case a prosecution was ordered. The chairman (Mr W. J. Walter) said it was right that the law should be enforced, but it was possible to overdo it. The traffic inspectors in Christchurch waited for the farmer and he was not safe in the city. There were a thousand and one regulations broken in Christchurch every day, but it was only the farmer that was watched and prosecuted. Mr Newnham: The business man is equally a sufferer. Mr Walter: There should be legislation to take away the powers of these inspectors.
