“MEANS DISASTER.”
Dr Mannix Attacks Evil of Communism. REPEATED WARNINGS. (Special to the “ Star.”) MELBOURNE, October 20. Dr Mannix, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, was scathing in his condemnation of Communism when opening the State conference of the Hibernian Society to-day. He said that it could bring nothing but trouble. “ We are still waiting,” he said, “ for some reorganisation of capital on the lines advised by Leo XIII. and succeeding Popes. In spite of these repeated warnings capitalism has failed to reorganise itself to make for a more even distribution of the world’s wealth, and, until it does, we can have nothing but revolution and trouble. “ The failure of capitalism, as we know it, is the greatest force in the spread of Communism, which is everywhere raising its head, and which, unless checked, will undoubtedly bring disaster to the world. “ That capitalism has failed 'is no argument whatever to prove that Communism will succeed. It would, in my opinion, lead only to more harm, and I regret that any Australian should be so short-sighted as to join hands with revolutionaries from outside this country. “ It is lamentable, tdo, that Communism should now be making trouble in those few industries which we have, and on which we rely. Those who adopt Communism are grossly misguided and the sooner Australia awakens to that fact the better. " If only Australia is wise she should recover more rapidly than any other country in the world.” Ireland’s Troubles. Dealing with the unrest in Ifeland, Dr Mannix said that he greatly regretted that Communistic and revolutionary methods were asserting themselves there also. In a spirited attack on the futility of the results of such teachings, he said: “ I condemn them and deplore them.” “ Ireland,” he continued, “ now has a better opportunity than she has had for 700 years for getting all that she has ever asked for if only she is wise. England has sufficient troubles on her own hands and Irishmen need only remain wise and united.”
