Macfie (Otago district), A.0.F., has accepted an invitation to attend the jubilee celebrations of Court Papanui on October 8. By the death of Bro John Milne, the U.A.O.D. lost one of its oldest members. Nearly 50 years ago he was secretary of Mistletoe Lodge. Bro L. C. W. Knox, a member of Mistletoe Lodge, has accepted a position with General Deliveries, Ltd., in Bridgeburg, Ontario (Canada). Reference was made in the annual report to the loss sustained by Friendly Societies by the death of Past President Bro W. D. Conroy, trustee of the U.F.S. Benevolent Association.

Brother S. J. Geary (Loyal Progress Lodge), who underwent an operation for appendicitis in the Christchurch Hospital on Monday, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. A.O.F. Court Star of Canterbury will hold a social on October 7 in the Foresters’ ‘Hall for members and their wives and friends. Court Queen of Canterbury.—The monthly meeting was held in the F'oresters’ Hall, Oxford Terrace, last Monday, Chief Ranger Sister Green presiding. The date of holding the hard-up social was fixed for November 23, and the arrangements gave promise of a successful gathering. Past Chief Rangers were invited to the meeting of the newly formed P.C.R.’s Court in the Friendly Societies’ Hall, Hazeldean Road, on October 22. An invitation from Court Papanui to attend its jubilee celebrations on October 8 was accepted. U.A.O.D. Royal Arch Chapter No. I.—The full initiation ceremony for competition amongst lodges in the No. 1 district has been arranged for Wednesday, October 7, in the Orange Hall at 7.30. 1 The draw for places is:—No. 1, Anchor; No. 2, Ivy of Linwood; No. 3, Mistletoe; No. 4, Pioneer; No. 5, Lily of Richmond; No. 6, Queen of the Oak-. The executive will announce in these columns next Thursday the date for the presentation of prizes. Efficiency Competition.—The judges have completed their visits to the eight city lodges and are compiling their report, which will be issued to members shortly. Mistletoe Lodge.—Monday night’s meeting was presided over by Brother V. E. Noble in the Ridgley Hall. Discussion took place on the correspondence from the Grand Lodge regarding the postponement of the annual meeting in March, and the lodge cast a unanimous vote in favour of abandoning the meeting. It was decided to support the U.F.S. Council in the appointment of one representative to the Dominion U.F.S. Council. Brothers Dann and M’Dowell were presented with the Schumacher and Ives buttons won by them in the V.A. charge competition (Mistletoe). Brethren from Ridgley Lodge (1.0.0. F., N.Z.) and Anchor (U.A.0.D.) were entertained at a sports evening, and several competitions for prizes were held, Brothers F. L. Heriot (Anchor) and W. Garrard (Ridgley Lodge) being the winners.

Lily of Temuka.—The Druids’ Hall was crowded at the social on Monday last, 180 players in the card games and 120 dancers participating in the most successful function of the year. The winners at cards were:—Miss Stevens 1 and Miss A. Hopkinson 2; and Messrs A. R. Beck 1 and R. Thomas 2. Mr J. Solomon was an efficient M.C. and Mr J. Bichus provided the music. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss G. Williams and Mr F. Dwan. Star of Ashburton.—An interesting discussion took place at the meeting on Monday, when the correspondence from Grand Lodge was read regarding the postponement for one year of the annual meeting of delegates in March. It was explained that the money saved by the postponement wonld be used for assisting in the payment of the contributions of unemployed members. It

was decided, on a motion by Brother E. Parkin, that the lodge should consider at its next meeting a suggestion that only one delegate from each lodge should attend the meeting and have full Voting powers. Three new members were initiated and two propositions were received. The Success of Ashburton’s invitation to a “ hard-up ” social on October 5 was accepted.

1.0. R. Riccarton Lodge.—Members of the Ark of Refuge and Enterprise Tents were entertained with games and dances in the Riccarton Town Hall after the conclusion of the business at the last meeting of the lodge. 1.0.0. F., N.Z. Victoria Lodge (No. 18), Geraldine, celebrated its annual ball in the hall on Thursday night. There was a large attendance, and Messrs A. B. Haywood and F. J. Wood acted as M.C.’s. The waltzing competition was won by Mr J. Brosnahan and partner, with Mr J. Goodeve and partner second. Templeton Lodge.—The jubilee of the lodge was celebrated by a ball last Thursday evening, and was attended by members and representatives from surrounding districts. Messrs E. Chappel and J. Carter officiated as M.C.’s, and T. Slattery’s band provided the music. Miss Oliver and Mr Gourley won the Monte Carlo, and the lucky spot was won by Miss E. Blank and Mr J. Blank. Visitors included Brothers C. H. Browne, P.D.D.G.M., L. Steel, D. W. Greenslade (representing Grand Lodge), B. Barnsley (secretary, North Canterbury), W. Thackwell (Star of St Albans), H. Godfrey (Star of Linwood), M. Simson (Washington Lodge), R. J. Roberts and A. A. Scott (Olive Branch, U.A.0.D.), L. Cuneen and G. Ryan (H.A.C.8.5., Lincoln).

Hakatere Lodge.—There was a good attendance of members at the last meeting, over which N.G. Brother G. Adams presided. One transfer was granted, and a candidate was initiated, and it was reported that eleven members were on the sick fund. 1.0.0. F., M.U. Rangiora Lodge.—Arrangements for the seventy-first anniversary celebrations were made by the Social Committee at the meeting on Monday, and these will take place on October 14. Members of the lodge who had competed for the M’Phail Cup in the Friendly Societies cards tournament were congratulated on their win. They won six games and lost two, securing twelve points. The cup will be presented at a social on Wednesday, October 7, in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Loyal City of Norwich Juvenile Lodge.—Members and their friends attended in large numbers at the annual social and dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lyttelton, last Saturday. Brothers G. Tyro, F. M’Nulty, G. Radcliffe, L. L. Scott, L. Dromgoole were responsible for the arrangement of the social, which included dancing and various competitions. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs Peachey and Brother W. Thompson, the orange dance by Miss G. Glasson and Brother C. Lewis, and the Monte Carlo by the Misses M. Sterne and P. Huckle. Brothers L. L. Scott and G. A. Tyro were the M.C.’s, and MTss D. Jones provided the music. A number of sisters and brethren from the Loyal City of Norwich and the Loyal Kaia Toa Lodge attended.
