“DREAM COME TRUE.”

Patients Appreciate Rugby Broadcasts. GRATITUDE expressed. Though the Canterbury Rugby Union and the Radio Broadcasting Company were not able to come to terms for the broadcasting of Rugby matches from Lancaster Park this year, patients at the Coronation Hospital were able to listen-in to special broadcasts through an arrangement between those two bodies and through several men who gave valuable assistance with the project. To mark the patients’ appreciation of the broadcasts, representatives of the Rugby Union and others concerned were entertained at a social at the Coronation Hospital last evening. The guests included Dr W. S. Seed and Mr E. V. Phillips, representing the Rugby Union, Mr L. B. Hart, who defrayed the charge imposed by the Post and Telegraph Department, and Mr A. R. Allardyce, the well-known sports announcer, who described the games. Apologies for absence were received from Mr A. R. Harris, manager of the Broadcasting Company, which lent the land wire for the occasion, and Mr C. G. Clark, who provided the microphone and other radio gear. Mr Allardyce came in for favourable comment for his able description of the games, and was presented with a goldmounted fountain pen from the patients. One of the speakers was Mr W. Dailey, who gave an interesting outline of the 1928 All Blacks tour of South Africa. Dr I. C. Macintyre, Medical Superintendent of the Tuberculosis Sanatoria, in welcoming representatives of the Rugby Union, said that when the suggestion for a special broadcast for patients at the Coronation Hospital was made, he had looked upon it more or less as a dream, until arrangements came to be finalised. The broadcasts had been successful and had been very much appreciated by the patients. The arrangements showed that people outside the hospital were sympathetic to those unfortunate enough to be confined on the hills.
