Opening of Ashburton Festival. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, August 25. The seventh annual festival of the Ashburton Competitions Society commenced*this morning. There was a fair attendance. Results: Highland Fling (under fourteen years; county only; open to all who have never won a first prize*) Recalls: Jean Robertson (Tinwald), Kona Bell (Tinwald), Ngaio Johns (Ashburton). Also competed: Betty Whitting, Betty Stills, Byllee Stills, Elaine Wellman. Helen Loudon (all of Ashburton), and Keith Smith (of Eiffelton). Violin Solo (under sixteen years; own selection)—Master Theodore Staples (Ashburton), “Slumber Song”, 1. The Recitation, humorous (girls under eleven) —Joan Masters (Christchurch), “Bobby”, 1; Norma Sturrock (Christchurch), “ doing to Bed”, 2. Also competed: Beryl Resrgs (Christchurch). Recitation Test (girds eleven and under fourteen), “Winds Works”—Recalls: Ron a* Watts (Ashburton), Valerie Cater (Christchurch), Berwyn Frye (Christchurch). Also competed: Alma Shaw, Rona Hill, Kathleen Read, Margaret M’Allister (all of Christchurch), Jean Ede, Joyce Dunham, Betty Stills j (all of Ashburton), Catherine Plever (Timaru).
