ESSEX FOLLOW-ON.

Last Four Wickets Fall for 10 Runs. STRONG BOWLING ATTACK. (Special to Press Association.) (Received August 25, 9.5 a.m.) SOUTHEND-ON-SEA, August 24. The New Zealand bowlers definitely held the upper hand against Essex when the match was continued today. Pope was dismissed shortly after lunch by a low catch by Matheson at square leg off Vivian. Nichols and Bray were the only others to offer any resistance to the accurate bowling of Vivian and Merritt. Vivian was exceptionally steady. He bowled twenty-nine overs, including fourteen maidens, The last four wickets fell for ten runs. Eastman was unable to bat owing to an injured hand. The innings lasted 195 minutes. Lowry enforced a follow on, and Essex batted for an hour before stumps were drawn. Merritt again bowled well, and deserved more than one wicket.
