“SAM WELLER SWARRY”
The annual “‘Sam Weller Swarry” by the Richmond Working Men's Club held in the Union Rowing Club’s boatrheds last evening was one of the most successful in the history of the club. More than 200 members and visitors attended, and the committee made every effort to make the evening a complete success. Last evening's gathering celebrated the forty-second anniversary of the club. The entertainment was of a particularly high standard and all present entered into the true spirit of the occasion. Mr R. R. Woodward presided. The following toast list was honoured:—“The King,” proposed by Mr R. R. Woodward; “The Visitors,” proposed by Mr R. R. Woodward and responded to by the Deputy-Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer), Messrs J. Flood, W. Quirk and C. Hollis; "Kindred Clubs.” proposed by Mr R. S. Ward and responded to by the Rev F. T. Read, president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Messrs J. C. Cooper, president of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club, 8. W. Wales, president of the Lyttelton Club, and J. J. Lynskey, president of the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club; “The President, Officers and Committee,” proposed by Mr W. J. Appleyard and responded to by Mr R. R. Woodward; “The Entertainers,” proposed by Mr J. Mills and responded to by Mr W. Toomey. The chairman said that he wished to thank the Union Rowing Club for granting the use of its hall for the occasion. Items were contributed by Messrs E. Dowell, W. Toomey, B. Rennell (songs), C. Ohlson (cornet solos), R. Brundell (saxaphone solos), the Herd-man-Fisk Orchestra, and Mr J. Laurenson '(recitations).
