PROGRAMMES OF CHAMPIONS.

Distances They Covered in Their Races on the Turf.

It is never regarded as quite satisfactory to make a comparison of- the relative merits of horses who raced at different periods and who never met, but the distances they travelled during their racing present facts that take matters to a plane where a comparison can'be made, says “ Phaeton ” in an interesting article. Carbine, David, Poitrel, Gloaming and Limerick can be appropriately cited as a very noteworthy quintet of the hard-worked brigade, and from the following statement it will be seen that David’s record stands out well. David must have been equipped with legs of the steel bar order, for he contested no fewer than twenty-one races at two years old, the distance of which ran to fourteen miles and four furlongs, and he was credited with being quite sound when he went off the turf at eight years after contesting 125 races. In regard to Gloaming’s record, the outstanding fact is that he was not called upon to contest a. race beyond a mile and a half and that thirty-two of the fifty-seven races he contested ranged from four furlongs to seven furlongs. The following is a statement of the distances travelled respectively by

David, Limerick, Carbine, Gloaming and Poitrel in their racing: Total distance. As his victories included the Sydney Cup under 9.7 and several weight-for-age events, his record furnishes a bright page in the history of the Australian turf. David’s record is so remarkable that the lines on which he is bred furnish material for an interesting study. From the leading lines of his pedigree appended, it will be seen that David’s sire and dam were both bred in Australia :—• Sire: Baverstock, by Malster (son of Bill of Portland and grandson of St Simon) from Wakeful, by Trenton (son of Musket from Insomnia, by Robinson Crusoe (son of Angler). Dam: Linotype, by Linacre (son of Wolf’s Crag and grandson of Barcaldine) from Zentha, by Simmer (son of St Simon) from Zenina, by Goldsbrough (son of Fireworks). David is included among ♦he sires at the stud in New South Wales.
