SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

BRIDGE PARTY AT WOMEN’S CLUB. Mrs G. W. C. Smithson and Mrs F. Banks were hostesses for a delightful bridge party held at the Canterbury Women’s Club last evening. The reception room looked particularly charming with a profusion of pink and white spring blossom, pussy-willow and mimosa arranged in large bowls about the room. Thirty-six tables were occupied by members and their friends. Mrs Smithson wore an* attractive frock of cherry-red taffetas with a large floral design, and a black chiffon velvet bridge coat. Mrs Banks was in a handsome frock of black georgette and lace, worn under a black embossed georgette coatee. Farewell Party at Sumner. A farewell social to Miss Eileen Sherrard, who is joining the nursing profession and to Miss Jessie Jerrand and Mr C. Sherrard, who are to be married, was held recently at the Sumner Presbyterian Church hall. The room had been prettily decorated with balloons and greenery by the Bible class girls. Mrs Topping presented the bride-elect with silverware from the school and congregation. Miss Trixie Lonquet, on behalf of the Bible class girls, presented Miss Sherrard with a pearl-mounted fountain pen and thermometer. The Rev J. M. Simpson also spoke. Humorous recitations were given by Messrs Hall and Douglas. Miss Hunter was accompaniste and Miss M’Donald sang. A competition ‘‘Church celebrities,” arranged by Miss Kilner, was won by Miss Trixie Lonquet. Messrs F. Simpson and C. Sherrard were the M.C.’s for the grand march and the musical games. Concert at Burwood. A successful concert in aid of the hall funds was held in the Burwood Hall on Tuesday evening before an appreciative audience. Mrs Voller’s party, aided by the Colombo Street Baptist girls, and Wells’s orchestra gave the various items. The following was the programme:—Solo, Miss Kathleen Partridge; Highland dance. Miss Jean Dickson; song, Mr J. Wilson; recitation, Miss M. Ball; song. Miss Netta Dickson; sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Jean Dickson; duo, Misses Bell and Clark; contralto solo, Mrs R. E. Voller; recitation, Miss Thelma Cusack; Irish jig, in character, Misses B. and J. Dickson; duet, Messrs Mitchell and Wilson; story without words, Colombo Street Baptist girls; song with violin obligato, Miss K. Partridge; step dance, Miss B. Dickson; vocal duet, Mrs R. E. Voller and Miss Partridge; recitation, Miss Thelma Cusack; song, Mr A. Mitchell. Bridge Evening at Oxford. An enjoyable bridge -evening, organised by four ladies, was held recently in the Coronation Hall, Oxford, in aid of the Anglican Church funds, which benefitted considerably. A tasty supper was served. Prizes for the highest scores were won by Mrs Wolff and Mr Bringans. Those who attended and helped in making the evening a success were:— Rev H. Johnston, J. Wolff, S. Buxton, Montgomery, R. Debenham, L. and R. Henderson. Dance for Visitor. A jolly little dance was given last evening at Miss Iris Edmonds’s studio by Mr J. W. A. Harris to welcome his brother, Mr T. N. R. Harris, who has recently arrived from England to spend some time in Christchurch. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs Derrick Gould, Mr and Mrs J. G. L.
