SPORT AND SPORTSMEN.

A Dunedin telegram to the “ Star ” says: The South Island inter-univer-sity harrier championship meeting will be held at the Wingatui racecourse on Saturday. The teams are : Canterbury College—Bambery, Baigent, Jowett, Marshall, Young and Parrott. Otago University—Stewart. Ross, King, Watt, Mathewson, Harris. « X X To-day the New Zealand cricketers commence a two-day match against Norfolk at Norfolk. Essex, a strong county, will be faced on Saturday. X 35 X Canterbury on several occasions have been beaten by narrow margins by Hawke’s Bay, just as they were beaten yesterday. In 1926 at Lancaster Park the Bay won by 17 to 15; in 1925, at Napier, the Bay won. 24-18; in 1923, the Bay won 9-8. These three were all Shield games. In 1927 Canterbury also lost 11-8. X X X It is anticipated there will be a wild boom in Otago boxing in the course of the next month or two. As soon as A. J. Cleverley is in trim it is hoped to go on with the contest between him and Jack O’Malley, and other professional contests may also be considered, especially if Alan Campbell’s injured hand yields to treatment. A big interprovincial amateur tournament between Otago and Canterbury boxers is also listed for next month. XXX The course for the New Zealand amateur 100-mile road cycling championship has been approved by the Otago centre. The race will start at Forbury Park, the riders proceeding to Balclutha and back to circle the Forbury racecourse before the finish is reached. The event will be held on October 3. X X X At a meeting of the Auckland Football Association a telegram was received from the New Zealand Council asking if Tramurewa would be prepared to play the final of the Chatham Cup competition with Nomads (Christchurch) at Christchurch instead of at Wellington. The communication caused considerable adverse comment among members of the committee, and it was finally decided to reply that the association was not in favour of the suggestion. The question of finance and time off for players would constitute a big handicap, while the chances of the travelling team benefiting to any extent from the gate takings in Christchurch would be very small. Any entries received from Auckland clubs for this competition had been sent in on the assumption that the final would be played in Wellington.
