500-YEAR-OLD DEBT.
Amazing Decree Made in Spain. ARISTOCRATS DISPOSSESSED United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 20, noon.) MADRID, August 19. The latest Government decree ordering the seizure by the State of all properties given Dy aristocrats as loans to past Kings has led to remarkable cases. For instance the ancestors of the Marquise Frenchilla five centuries ago lent the King eighty-four ducats, or £4O, receiving in exchange several thousand acres of land, which their descendants have occupied and cultivated ever since. The decree permits the State to claim all the earnings from this land for the past 500 years above £4O.
SPAIN’S CONSTITUTION. Complete Freedom Given All Creeds. MADRID, August 18. The Constitution, as finally drafted vests the nation’s supreme powers in a single chamber Parliament. The President will be elected by adult suffrage subject to dismissal by a referendum. The President will not be empowered to sign any declaration of war except in cases foreseen in the Covenant of the League of Nations, and then only after the exhaustion of every method of arbitration. There will be no State religion, but complete freedom for every creed.
