YOUNG MAN ISSUES VALUELESS CHEQUES

FURTHER CHARGES MAY FOLLOW A REMAND. “I think, we were too kind to him yesterday,” said Chief Detective Carroll in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Cyril Mortimer Stonyer, 27, a traveller, was charged with obtaining goods and money to the value of £5 10s from Watsons, Ltd., jewellers, by means of a false pretence, a valueless cheque. Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the bench, and Mr Edgar appeared for the accused. “ He was remanded yesterday,” the chief detective continued, “ but the money has not been repaid to Watson’s as agreed. Also, he has been issuing other valueless cheques. One obtained him £9 odd from a Mr Stevens. Another was issued by him to a city firm, but the amount has been paid. If Mr Stevens is paid there will be no complaint, but a charge will probably follow a default. “It looked like a case for leniency yesterday: but now it is somewhat different,” the Magistrate remarked. Mr Edgar: He is expecting money from Timaru. These other cheques are attended by just the same circumstances as the first. The accused was remanded till Monday next, and ordered to report twice daily to the police. “If Jae absconds he will catch it ten limes as hard,” said Mr Lawry.
