WOULD NOT SUPPORT MOTHERLESS CHILD.

MAN SAID HE SPENT £I2OO ON RACEHORSES. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 20 At Matamata, Jonathan Edward Webster elected to serve a period in prison rather than pay maintenance for a motherless child.

Webster admitted having received £I2OO from England, but stated that this had been spent in bets on racecourses throughout New Zealand. If the relatives had gone to him in a different, manner, he said, he would have paid. He was “ easy ”as to what they did with him. They could send him to gaol. Maintenance at 15s a week, and past maintennee of £SO were ordered. Security for payment was fixed at £2OO.

The Destitute Persons Act provides that where security is fixed the defendant remains in gaol for a period not exceeding six months, or until security is found.
