THE SURPRISE.

Jack Frost lay fast asleep underneath some autumn leaves. He had been very troubled just lately, for try as he would he could not drive away Autumn.

The sun had just risen and Jack, with a band of followers, marched to a common where he had planned to capture Autumn. Autumn had seen Jack’s fur coat amongst the grass. Quickly she gathered together her subjects and, bidding farewell to 1931, she departed. There was no one merrier than Jack Frost that night; he painted pictures of autumn on the windows of houses. The next morning an old lady who had forgotten to drink her milk found a circle of ice on top of her cup with “Never Forget” written on it. Jack Frost laughed merrily when Icicles, his pet dog, brought him a letter which he had found in his kennel. Autumn had written it apologising for keeping Jack waiting so long for his season, and she sent hirfi a leaf diary. Sylvia Zimmerman.
