THE FROST FAIRIES.

“Gee! but its cold,” gasped Bobbie Flinton to his sister Greta as they raced homewards over the frosty grass. “ Yes,” agreed Greta, “much too cold to run,” and she slowed into a walk. “ Pooh! softie,” said Bobbie, contemptuously, but nevertheless he decreased his pace. Bobbie and Greta were twins, although there was such a contrast in their looks. Bobbie had fair hair and grey eyes, and Greta had a mop of black curls, suiting her soft hazel eyes beautifully. The children lived in a tiny cottage on the edge of a wood, and were just returning from an errand across the paddocks. Suddenly they came across a frozen pool in a little hollow. “ Oh! isn’t it lovely,” cried Greta enthusiastically. “It looks as if the frost fairies have been at work, doesn’t it?” “ Don’t be silly, Gret, thete’s no such thing as fairies,” answered Bobbie gruffly. Greta was about to reply when from the midst of the pool a myriad voices cried angrily, “No such thing as fairies, indeed! How dare you! You shall be punished severely.” From under a sparkling archway poured myriads of tiny, dazzling forms, shouting and gesticulating. Bobbie and Greta just stood and stared, not daring to move. Then suddenly the sun peeped out from behind a cloud and sent a shaft of light acrosfe the pool. With a cry of disappointment the fairies descended to the earth and hurried through the archway. With a sigh of relief, Bobbie turned to Greta. “ I—er—think we had better be off. By the way, I—l think you were right about the frost fairies.’* Valerie Pas ft eld, Blackball.
